Curtin Malaysia reinvents maths learning with game-based STEM outreach at SMK Lopeng Tengah

Miri, Sarawak – 9 May 2026 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is reshaping how students experience mathematics, with 90 students from SMK Lopeng Tengah benefiting from an energised, dual-track SuCCESS Mentors Mathematics Programme that blends exam readiness with game-based learning.

Held on 20 April and led by Jameson Malang, Senior Teaching Fellow from Curtin Malaysia’s School of Pre-U and Continuing Education (SPACE), the programme marked a significant evolution of the SuCCESS initiative, introducing interactive mathematics games alongside its established SPM-focused workshops.

For the first time, lower secondary students explored mathematics through high-energy activities such as ‘Memory Grid,’ ‘Quiz Headache,’ and ‘Math Escape.’ Supported by 25 Curtin student mentors, 40 Form Two and Three students worked in teams to tackle challenges designed to build critical thinking and collaboration, while changing perceptions of mathematics from difficult to enjoyable.

At the same time, 50 Form Four students took part in targeted small-group workshops focused on SPM-level questions, strengthening their understanding and exam confidence.

The newly introduced games initiative was driven by a student organising team led by Austin Jason Pui, with Irfa Safrina Rahmat and Resty Anak James, reflecting Curtin Malaysia’s strong emphasis on student-led impact and leadership development.

School leaders, including Senior Assistant Gan Chia Ling, underscored the programme’s dual impact, making learning engaging for younger students while equipping exam candidates with practical strategies for success.

Developed in close collaboration with SMK Lopeng Tengah’s academic staff, the programme highlights Curtin Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to community engagement, demonstrating that with the right approach, mathematics can be both accessible and exciting.
