Curtin Malaysia set to host GlobeCoRes 2025, expanding global impact on sustainability and community research
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 30 May 2025 – Riding on the success of its groundbreaking debut last year, Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has officially launched the second edition of the Globesync: Community Research and Sustainability Conference (GlobeCoRes 2025) with bold ambitions to deepen global collaboration, amplify community voices, and transform research into lasting impact.
The recent GlobeCoRes 2025 Soft Launching Ceremony, held at Dynasty Hotel here, saw a strong show of support from international dignitaries, local leaders, healthcare professionals, and community representatives. The hybrid GlobeCoRes 2025 will take place from 4 to 5 December 2025, with Day 1 at the Curtin Malaysia campus and Day 2 at Pullman Miri Waterfront.
‘From Evidence to Legacy: Transforming Research into Sustainable Action’ is the theme guiding this year’s conference, which is expected to draw over 1,000 participants, including at least 400 in-person attendees. Scholars and practitioners from Brunei, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Malaysia have already confirmed their involvement.
Professor Roy Rillera Marzo, Dean of Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences and Chairperson of GlobeCoRes 2025, described the conference as a platform for meaningful cross-border action.
“Last year, we laid the foundation. This year, we are scaling up, with more international partners, deeper conversations, and initiatives that will leave a legacy. We want research to not just be discussed but applied, lived, and felt in communities,” he said. He pointed out that the conference last year attracted over 1,000 participants, with 400 attending in person and 700 joining virtually.
“This year’s conference will further strengthen global collaboration, with 8 to 10 international institutions expected to formalise partnerships. The agenda includes two workshops and three panel discussions, addressing themes such as Indigenous Peoples, Voices of Elders, and The Role of Media in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Professor Marzo added.
The soft launch brought together notable guests including Mayor Benjamin Magalong of Baguio City and Mayor Bernard Waclin of Itogon, both from the Philippines; Miri Deputy Mayor Haji Ariffin bin Mohamad; Miri Division Health Officer Dr. P. Raviwharmman Packierisamy; and hospital directors and NGO leaders from across Miri, including . Dr. Tarek Mitri, President of the Rotary Club Miri; Matthew Benson, Deputy President of the Dayak Iban Association; and Christopher Narang, Vice President of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA).
A key announcement at the soft launch was the Catalysts for Change Legacy Award, which will recognise individuals and organisations who have led impactful, sustainable transformation in their communities.
Another major highlight is the upcoming launch of the Globesync Consortium, a global alliance of academic and community institutions driving joint sustainability initiatives. With 14 partner institutions already on board, the Consortium will be formalised once 30 active partners are confirmed.
“Through this network, we will co-create knowledge, co-develop projects, and most importantly, co-own the solutions we bring to global challenges,” remarked Professor Marzo.
GlobeCoRes 2025 continues to position Miri and Curtin Malaysia as a regional hub for inclusive, action-oriented research that bridges academia, government, and civil society.
