Curtin Malaysia staff conduct CSR project at rural school in Kuala Baram

Miri – 26 June 2023 – A team of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) staff members recently visited Sekolah Kebangsaan Kuala Baram, a semi-rural primary school in Kuala Baram, to conduct a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project.

As the school is located 24 kilometres from the city centre with limited access to healthcare services and educational resources, the project not only aimed to provide the school’s pupils and teachers with much-needed support and opportunities to learn and grow, but also serve the needs of villagers in the area, thus the pupils’ parents were also invited to participate.

The project was organised by Curtin Malaysia’s Health, Counselling & Disability Services department, and the team members also comprised academic and professional staff of the university’s International Student Office, Campus Services Department, Office of Research & Development, Faculty of Humanities & Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering & Science, and School of Pre-U & Continuing Education, as well as seven Curtin Malaysia student leaders.

As part of the project, the team carried out basic health screening of the parents to assess their overall health. They also organised mental well-being and relaxation exercises to help the schools’ teachers and support staff develop emotional stability and resilience.

In addition to that, the team delivered environmental awareness talks to promote ecological consciousness and encourage sustainable living practices among kindergarten to Primary 2 pupils. To help prepare pupils for their transition from primary to secondary school, the team conducted talks for Primary 3 to Primary 4 pupils on how to adapt to new environments, manage time effectively, and build healthy relationships with peers and teachers.

Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils, meanwhile, were introduced to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities to inspire their curiosity and interest in these fields. Through interactive activities and experiments, the students were able to apply theoretical concepts to real-life situations.

The project was a collaborative effort of Curtin Malaysia staff of various disciplines who volunteered their time and expertise to help the underprivileged communities. It represented a significant milestone in Curtin Malaysia’s community outreach initiatives, aligning with their commitment to social responsibility and inclusive education.
