Curtin Malaysia strengthens global climate research through Indonesian collaboration

Miri, Sarawak – 7 May 2026 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is advancing international efforts in environmental sustainability through a successful four-month research attachment by Indonesian scholar Via Aini from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI).

Funded by Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, the programme, conducted from November 2025 to March 2026, highlights growing regional collaboration in tackling climate change and environmental pollution.

This initiative is part of an ongoing collaboration between Curtin University Malaysia and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia aimed at strengthening international research cooperation in environmental science and climate change.

Working under the supervision of Professor Tony Hadibarata of Curtin Malaysia’s Civil and Construction Engineering Department, Via contributed to cutting-edge research on pollution dynamics, climate change impacts, and sustainable mitigation strategies in tropical environments. Her work spanned field assessments, laboratory analysis, and data-driven studies, strengthening scientific understanding of environmental risks in Southeast Asia.

The collaboration has already delivered tangible outcomes, including joint research publications in progress, enhanced environmental monitoring methods, and expanded research capacity through advanced laboratory training.

Professor Hadibarata described the programme as “highly productive,” noting that it deepened international research engagement while fostering interdisciplinary exchange.

For Via, the experience provided critical global exposure and reinforced the value of collaboration in addressing climate challenges.

The initiative marks a significant step in Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to building cross-border partnerships and driving science-based solutions to global environmental issues.
