Curtin Malaysia students and lecturers learn fundamentals of stock trading during talk
Posted date:Miri – 20 March 2023 – The Curtin Finance and Investment Club (CFIC), the student-run club for finance students at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), recently hosted a talk on stock trading for students and lecturers of the university.
The talk entitled ‘Trading 101: Stock Trading for Beginners’ was delivered by finance lecturer Alpha Ngadan. A trader himself, Alpha describes himself as a swing trader (someone who tries to profit from short-term price movements in the market by using technical or fundamental analysis, often holding positions for a few days to several weeks).
Alpha informed the attendees that trading is more about managing risk. While fundamental analyses and technical analyses are equally important, it is also crucial to manage risk.
He also introduced them to the common tools required to start their trading journey – from using an application that can be downloaded from Google Play or the Apple App Store to a chart website that offers technical and fundamental analyses for free, as well as virtual accounts offered by Bursa Malaysia that allows traders to back test their trading strategies.
Alpha informed the attendees that over the next month or so, the CFIC will be organising workshops to guide students, lecturers and members of the public on how to start trading. The workshop topics will include planning a trade, recognising one’s risk appetite, and managing a trade (when to enter and when to exit a trade).
Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin University’s three-year Bachelor of Commerce in Finance, as well as Finance and Management, Finance and Marketing, and Accounting and Finance double majors, which can also be completed in three years.
“The field of finance can take you anywhere in the world to many careers. You can work in corporate finance for big business, for well-known financial institutions, or in financial markets in Malaysia and overseas,” said Alpha.
He said that financial planning and consultancy is one of the careers finance students can consider, and that includes trading in stocks.
“Financial planners help people make smart decisions with their money. They take time to understand each client’s goal and objectives, formulate a financial plan, monitor progress and help their clients maintain a budget. If you enjoy working with people and want to help others progress financially, then it Is worthwhile talking our finance single major, or as a double major in conjunction with management, marketing or accounting,” added Alpha.
