Curtin Malaysia students gear up for graduation and the future

Miri – 20 April 2023 – Over 170 soon-to-graduate students of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) this week attended pre-graduation sessions designed to prepare them for graduation and entering the workforce.

The sessions, which were conducted in hybrid mode, marked the close of the students’ final semester and three to four years of undergraduate study, depending on their programmes of study. They included separate briefing sessions for Faculty of Engineering and Science and Faculty of Business students where they were briefed on registration with professional bodies and the option to pursue postgraduate studies at Curtin Malaysia.

These faculty sessions were followed by a combined gathering of all the students where they were briefed on the requirements for graduation and registration for their graduation ceremonies.

The gathering included a forum with four Curtin Malaysia alumni who shared their thoughts on the significance of their Curtin education and qualifications in their careers. They also related their experiences transitioning from being university students to becoming young professionals, and gave insights into their respective industries, including career prospects for new graduates and the expectations of employers.

The four alumni were marketing and management graduate and entrepreneur Jarone Choo Chin Yii; marketing and management graduate and Masters by Research candidate Alvin Ling Han Ming; civil and construction engineering graduate and customer solutions engineer with Kone Singapore, Nahum Sim Luk Yao; and mechanical engineering graduate and site coordinator and maintenance engineer with Pekerjaan Piasau Konkerit, Oscar Ngu Wee Earn.

Prior to the forum, there was an industry sharing session by Dr. Dayang Hanani Abang Ibrahim, deputy director of CENTEXS Digital Academy, and Johnson Yap Joong Sern from Biji Design Sdn. Bhd. and project lead for the Microsoft Malaysia Team, as well as briefings on graduation procedures by an officer from Curtin Malaysia’s Graduations Office, postgraduate studies by Associate professor Perumal Kumar of the Curtin Malaysia Graduate School, and alumni discounts by domestic student recruitment assistant manager Samson Philip.

In his speech during the gathering, Curtin Malaysia Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vincent Lee, who was representing Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Prof. Simon Leunig, congratulated the students on reaching the final stage of their student journey and the prospect of graduating soon.

“This is a time to reflect on the good times and the tough times you have gone through in your journey, including the extraordinary challenges of online studies during the MCO,” he said.

He reminded them that they should be proud that they will soon be joining over 250,000 Curtin graduates across the world, including over 20,000 based in Malaysia, who have gone on to successful careers in a broad range of professions.

According to Prof. Lee, close to 10,000 of that number have come from Curtin Malaysia, befitting its status as Curtin University’s largest global campus and hub in Southeast Asia, and demonstrating its capacity to produce graduates of global calibre much sought-after by employers all over the world.
