Curtin Marketing Club learns through collaboration with local business and industry
Posted date:Miri – 18 October 2012 – Student members of the Curtin Marketing Club (CMC) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) are keen to take their learning beyond the classroom and gain valuable practical experience working with local business and industry.
Their initiatives are in line with Curtin University’s aim to be an international leader shaping the future through its graduates and research, and to be positioned among the top 20 universities in Asia by 2020. The university is currently ranked in the top 1% of 30,000 universities worldwide, according to the QS World University Rankings.
As part of Curtin University and its largest international campus, Curtin Sarawak is committed to helping Curtin achieve its vision. It conducts leading-edge research and strives to be at the forefront of teaching and learning, combining theory with practical study and challenging traditional boundaries of learning to create graduates who are job-ready.
In addition to providing opportunities for internships with its industry partners, guest lectures by industry professionals, as well as site visits and field trips, it encourages its students clubs such as the CMC to explore opportunities to interact and collaborate with local business and industry.
This not only exposes them to industry trends and practices, and apply what they learn in the classroom in the real world, but also gives them the opportunity to develop critical entrepreneurial and leadership skills that would give them an added advantage in their future careers.
With this goal in mind, the CMC championed the first-ever ‘Green Mobility Revolution Showcase’ in conjunction with the university’s Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2012 last month.
Supported by the event organising committee, their lecturers in the School of Business, the Curtin Eco Racing Team (CERT) that took part in this year’s Shell Eco-marathon; Curtin Sarawak’s consultancy arm, Curtin Consultancy Services (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and the Corporate Affairs Department of Sarawak Shell Berhad, the students garnered the support of leading car brands Mitsubishi, Nissan, Mazda and Proton to stage the showcase.
The showcase promoted new approaches to sustainable mobility in meeting the growing energy demand worldwide through the showcasing of fuel-efficient vehicles, specially-imported e-bikes and Curtin Sarawak’s entry in the 2011 Shell Eco-marathon at the Sepang International Circuit, Kuala Lumpur.
According to CMC member and showcase coordinator Aaron Lim, the showcase received a good response from visitors to the Curtin Sarawak Open Day, such that the CMC aims to organise a much bigger showcase for next year’s event.
Lim said the club’s objective to expose its members to the marketing practices of car dealerships was achieved and the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. They also learned a lot about promoting green mobility and the unique features of fuel-efficient vehicles, he added.
The showcase was the first of many events the CMC has planned and the club looks forward to collaborating with other external organisations for the benefit of its members and the wider community.
