Curtin Sarawak certificate conferment, graduation, award and scholarship events this weekend

Miri – 4 May 2011 – Several hundred students of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will graduate from various pre-university and degree programmes this week.

Four events spread over three days are being organised by the university at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club to mark this momentous occasion, beginning with the Diploma and Foundation Certificate Ceremony 2011 at 2.30 pm tomorrow.

During the event, 22 students will graduate with diplomas in business, and 19 with diplomas in process plant technology (oil industry). For 205 foundation students, the event marks the completion of foundation studies in commerce, engineering and media studies.

The Diploma and Foundation Certificate Ceremony will be followed by the Graduation Ceremony 2011 at 6.30 pm on 6 May, and Award and Scholarship Ceremony 2011 and Curtin Sarawak Alumni Dinner at 10.00 am and 6.30 pm respectively on 7 May.

This year’s Graduation Ceremony, the university’s tenth, will see 313 students graduating from various undergraduate programmes, and 19 from postgraduate programmes.

192 students of the School of Business will graduate from the Bachelor of Arts (Mass Communication), Bachelor of Business, and various Bachelor of Commerce single and double major programmes.

The School of Engineering and Science, meanwhile, will see 79 students graduating from the Bachelor of Engineering programme with majors in chemical engineering, civil and construction engineering, computer systems engineering, electrical engineering, electrical power engineering, electronic and communication engineering, and mechanical engineering.

In addition, 42 students will graduate with Bachelor of Technology (Applied Geology), Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), and Bachelor of Technology (Computer Systems and Engineering) degrees.

Postgraduate degrees to be conferred include 12 for Master of Business Administration, one for Master of Finance, and six for Master of Science (Project Management).

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, who is the chairman of the Curtin Sarawak Campus Council, will officiate at the Graduation Ceremony, while Senadin assemblyman Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also the chairman of the university’s management board, will officiate at the Diploma and Foundation Certificate Ceremony. The Award and Scholarship Ceremony, meanwhile, will be officiated by the Chancellor of Curtin University, Dr. Jim Gill.

The Award and Scholarship Ceremony will see over 100 students and staff of the university receiving awards for academic and professional excellence as well as participation in extracurricular activities and community service. They will include students who made it into the Vice Chancellor’s List and graduating student ambassadors of the prestigious John Curtin Leadership Academy.

Scholarships from Curtin, the private sector and individual donors will also be presented to deserving students during the event.

The various events will also be attended by the Vice Chancellor of Curtin University, Professor Jeanette Hacket; Deputy Vice-Chancellor – International, Professor David Wood; Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Curtin Sarawak, Professor Ian Kerr; as well as members of the Curtin (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. Board of Directors, and Curtin Sarawak Campus Council and Management Board.
