Curtin Sarawak Electronic Exhibition a crowd-puller
Posted date:Miri – 10 September 2012 – The Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently organised its largest-ever Electronic Exhibition which attracted the participation of more than 700 staff and students of the varsity, students of local secondary schools and members of the public.
Held at the university’s Event and Recreation Centre, the exhibition featured 30 projects by academic staff and students, a ‘Renewable Energy Corner’, ‘Linux Information Booth’, ‘History of Computers Section’, ‘Cisco Aspire Game Booth’ and ‘DoTA Competition Viewing Corner’.
Showcasing their products at the exhibition were mobile network provider DiGi and National Instruments, an American company known for its graphical design approach in systems development.
The opening ceremony was attended by guest of honour Hii King Chiong, a local businessman and philanthropist; Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Alistair Inglis; Dean of Teaching and Learning Associate Professor Dr. Beena Giridharan; Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Associate Professor Dr. Ashutosh Kumar Singh.
President of Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch, Oo Kean Cherng, said the secondary school students who attended thoroughly enjoyed the activities, particularly the hands-on workshop entitled ‘Building my First Motor’ conducted by Dr C.S. Teoh of DreamCatcher. They also benefitted from other activities which including a talk on Artificial Intelligence by Terence Tan, senior lecturer from the ECE Department.
Another hit amongst visitors to the exhibition was the ‘Cabling Workshop’ which saw Curtin Sarawak’s Bachelor of Technology (Computer System and Networking) students demonstrating the wiring of Local Area Networks (LAN).
According to Oo, it is hoped that the exhibition themed ‘Green Technology’ raised the consciousness of those who attended to help reduce our carbon footprint.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ashutosh commented that the ECE Department always encourages its students to participate in such activities to develop their soft skill and prepare them for their future careers.
