Curtin Sarawak hosts Borneo Conference 2007: Crossing Borders

MIRI, 4 February 2007 – The Crossing Borders: 2007 Borneo Conference will be held at the Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre of Curtin University of Technology Sarawak, Miri on 4 & 5 February 2007. The conference is scheduled for two days with approximately 50 internationally acknowledged speakers with high research profiles from many countries, including Malaysia, Australia, Philippines, Denmark, Singapore, USA, Thailand and UK presenting their papers.

“The conference aims to provide a forum for researchers to share their ideas on the issue on “Borders” emphasising on Borneo and its neighbouring region,” states Dr. Keling Stevenson, Co-Convenor of the Borneo Conference 2007 and Director of School of Business, Curtin Sarawak.

“Some of the themes include Gender and National Belonging, Borders as Emerging Economies, Borders as Sites of Inclusion and Exclusion, Borders and the Politics of Globalisation, Shifting Borders in Management, Borders as Zones of Insecurity, Migration, Border Trading and Borders as Sites of Human/Environmental Interaction,” informed Beena Giridharan, Co-Convenor of the Borneo Conference 2007 and Deputy Director of Pre-University Studies, Curtin Sarawak.

The first Borneo conference was held at Curtin Bentley, Perth in 2003 by the Research Unit For The Study of Societies In Change (RUSSIC) a research and teaching unit at the Division of Humanities at Curtin. This inaugural Curtin-Miri and Curtin-Bentley Research workshop, brought together researchers from two campuses to exchange information on individual and group research undertaken in the respective region.
