Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch welcomes new members

Miri – 23 September 2011 – The Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently held a party to welcome its new members and familiarise them with the IEEE and the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch activities on campus.

IEEE, founded in the United States, is the world’s largest technical professional society and serves to advance innovation and technology for the benefit of humanity. Its members consist of professionals from the electrical, electronic and computing fields as well as areas related to science and technology.

The welcoming party started off with a presentation on the IEEE and its purpose and resolutions by the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch vice-chairman, Tanvir Ahmed, followed by a screening of the IEEE’s worldwide promotional video. A video featuring testimonials by IEEE student members worldwide and instructions on how to join the IEEE online was also shown during the event.

In his presentation, Tanvir announced that the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch will organise weekly events each semester for its members, which will include competitions, workshops and educational site visits. This, he said, would ensure that students derive maximum benefit from membership in the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch. Tanvir also introduced the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch’s 2011 committee to the new members.

Present at the event were the head of the School of Engineering and Science’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and coordinator of the Curtin Sarawak IEEE Student Branch, Associate Professor Ashutosh Kumar Singh, and senior lecturer Dr. Low Siow Yong.
