Curtin Sarawak library to help SMK Lutong’s Resource Centre with cataloguing and classification

Miri – 3 March 2011 – Staff of the library at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) comprising Chief Librarian Levas Mejus and librarians Christina Urai Dang, Marlina Ahmad and Sorina Ramli, paid a visit to the Resource Centre at SMK Lutong recently.

According to Levas, the visit was part of the library’s ongoing Outreach Programme activities and also to propose the conducting of a Cataloguing and Classification Workshop for staff and students of the school.

The Curtin librarians were received by Resource Centre teacher Fadzliani Fadzil together and other teachers and a number of Resource Centre school prefects.

The teachers briefed the Curtin librarians on the Resource Centre’s activities, collections and library system, and the Curtin librarians reciprocated with a briefing on their library services, resources and facilities.

As SMK Lutong’s library collections are not being catalogued according to the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress subject headings, the Curtin librarians offered to assist the Resource Centre in the cataloguing and classification of its collections.

In addition, The Library at Curtin Sarawak will be organising a Cataloguing and Classification Workshop for the Resource Center’s teachers and prefects sometime in April.

The objectives of the workshop include introducing the rules and procedures of the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress subject headings to the teachers and prefects, teaching them how to catalogue and systematically label books according to subjects, sharing constructive ideas, and solving problems in cataloguing.

“Through the workshop, we hope to enhance the sharing of knowledge and collaboration between our library and SMK Lutong’s Resource Centre,” said Levas.
