Curtin Sarawak Photo Contest 2012 winners receive prizes

Miri – 19 September 2012 – Four amateur photographers comprising students and a staff member of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) who won the top prizes in the university’s Curtin Sarawak Photo Contest 2012 received their prizes from Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Alistair Inglis recently.

The contest, which was organised by Curtin Sarawak’s Corporate Communications Department for the second year and open to all students and staff of the university, saw close to 300 photographs being submitted for judging. The photographs featured staff and students, as well as scenery, facilities and campus life on the Curtin Sarawak campus, and  attractions in Miri.

Aimed at promoting Curtin Sarawak as a prime choice and having a conducive environment for tertiary studies in the thriving city of Miri, the contest featured five categories: Portraiture, Situations, Landscapes, Still Life, and Buildings & Facilities. Shortlisted photographs were judged based on their technical merit, composition and impact.

William Yong, a chemical engineering student of the university’s School of Engineering and Science walked away with the grand prize which comprised a ShaShinKi gift voucher worth RM400.

The second and third prizes went to mass communication student Mohd. Budriz Abdul Aziz from the School of Business and Application Development Officer Tay Miaw Lang of the university’s Information and Communication Technology Department, respectively.

Mohd. Budriz won a RM300 ShaShinKi gift voucher while Tay received a voucher worth RM200.

Meanwhile, the People’s Choice Award was won by Liew Jia Yang, a civil and construction engineering student of the School of Engineering and Science. Her entry received the highest number of votes on Curtin Sarawak’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CurtinUniversitySarawakMalaysia.

Also present at the prize presentation was Curtin Sarawak’s Corporate Communications Manager, Nicholas Leong.

As all submissions will be used by the university for commercial purposes, the contestants are likely to see their photos being featured in the university’s advertising, publications and online promotion for some years to come.

“Congratulations to the winners for their excellent work, and thanks to all our students and staff who participated in the contest. These new photos will certainly bring a refreshing new look and add a whole new dimension to our promotional material and publications,” said Professor Inglis.
