Curtin Sarawak welcomes visitors from China and Brunei
Posted date:Miri – 30 July 2012 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently hosted a 20-member group comprising 12 students, six teachers and two tour leaders from Ping Nang district in Fujian Province, southern China, who were on a study tour and student exchange programme to Miri, Bintulu and Sibu.
The students comprising six boys and six girls all aged 13 years were from Hua Kiew Secondary School in Ping Nang district. They were led by their teacher and group leader Li Zhen Yan, and accompanied by Yong Yew Hui of the Miri Ping Nang Association.
On hand to welcome the group to the campus were staff of Curtin Sarawak’s Student Recruitment Department led by Marketing Manager Liew Mei Yin and Corporate Communications Officer Marcella Gider.
Following a briefing by Liew and her team, the visitors were taken on a tour of the university campus.
Though it was the group’s first visit to Sarawak, the people of Ping Nang district are no strangers to Sarawak as they share ancestral links with many Foochows in Sarawak whose families originated from Ping Nang district. During their stay in Miri, the students attended classes at Riam Secondary School and Pei Min Secondary School.
Also visiting Curtin Sarawak recently was a group of eight staff from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Programme, Faculty of Engineering, Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), which was led by ITB’s Deputy Dean of Student Affairs, Joffry bin Hj. Bungsu.
The intention of their visit was to meet and exchange ideas with their counterparts in the Department of Electrical and Communication Engineering of Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science, as well as explore opportunities for research collaboration, exchange visits and sports activities between the two institutions.
On hand to receive them were the Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor Dr. Ashutosh Kumar Singh and his staff; University Life Haslina Malek and Corporate Communications Officer Marcella Gider.
Over the past year, Curtin Sarawak has hosted visitors from educational institutions in Sarawak, Brunei, West Malaysia, China and Indonesia, as well as corporate and government officials from China, Japan and Oman.
