Curtin Volunteers! organising blood donation drive

Miri – 7 March 2012 – The Curtin Volunteers! (CV!), the largest student-run organisation in Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), is holding a blood donation drive from 9.00 am to 12.00 noon on 28 March 2012.

The event, which is being jointly organised with the university’s University Life Department, will be held at the university’s Recreation & Event Centre.

Themed ‘It’s Better to Give than Take’, the drive aims to assist the Miri Blood Bank in replenishing its blood stock as well as to foster the spirit of volunteerism among the campus community.

According to the organising chairman, chemical engineering student Wong Kah Khing, the CV! hope to collect more than 40 packs of blood from suitable donors during the drive.

Students and staff of Curtin Sarawak who are healthy and fit are encouraged to volunteer as blood donors and help save lives. A registration booth at the foyer of the Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre will be open between 10.00 am and 2.00 pm from 12 to 27 March (weekdays only) for those who are interested to volunteer. Registration is also open to the general public.

The CV! has been organising blood donation drives bi-annually since 2003. Last year’s drive saw a considerable number of students and staff taking part. Out of 86 volunteers who came forward, 76 managed to donate their blood.

Apart from blood donation drives, the CV! has organised other activities and events such as beach cleaning campaigns, charity fundraisers, and community outreach projects in support of rural communities and local charities such as the Miri Sunflower Centre, Miri Palliative Care Association, Piasau Animal Welfare Support (PAWS) Miri, Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS), Methodist Children’s Home and Miri Mental Health Association.
