Enrolments for Curtin Sarawak’s latest diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses now open
Posted date:Miri – 1 July 2011 – Enrolments are now open for the second semester of the foundation, diploma and undergraduate courses at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) which commence in July, as well as the August/September intake for its postgraduate courses.
The university is taking enrolments for new diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses introduced earlier this year, that is, the Diploma of Instrumentation and Control Engineering, Bachelor of Arts (Borneo Studies), and Master of Policy Sciences, which is run in collaboration with the Centre for Modern Management (CMM) in Kuching.
This is in addition to its more established diploma courses in business, process plant technology and occupational health and safety; bachelor degree courses in commerce, engineering, science and technology; as well as postgraduate degree courses by coursework in accounting designed for non-accounting graduates; project management; and engineering and media, culture and arts by research.
Diploma of Instrumentation and Control Engineering
Curtin Sarawak’s School of Foundation and Continuing Studies is offering a Diploma of Instrumentation and Control Engineering that is designed to meet the needs of a variety of industries – from chemical plants and petroleum refineries to food processing plants and businesses that monitor and control pollution.
The course has been designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to install, set up, test, develop, select, commission, maintain and diagnose faults or malfunctions of equipment and systems for the measurement, recording, monitoring and control of physical or chemical phenomenon and related process control systems. They will also gain skills and knowledge in occupational health and safety, teamwork, technical drawing, scheduling, specification and report writing, and research, in addition to instrumentation and electrical installations and systems.
The Diploma of Instrumentation and Control Engineering comprises 8 modules and is delivered over two years’ full-time or equivalent part-time study. It is designed for students who have completed at least five years of secondary school education, sat for the SPM examination and obtained credit in three academic subjects including at least C6 in SPM English and Mathematics. Students with polytechnic qualification (two years post form five) are also eligible to apply.
Bachelor of Arts (Borneo Studies)
Starting this year, Curtin Sarawak has been offering Borneo Studies as a major under its Bachelor of Arts programme as part of its commitment towards preserving Borneo’s historical and socio-cultural heritage and promoting an informed understanding of its diverse regions. The course is unique to Curtin Sarawak as it is the only Curtin campus offering the course and the curriculum and course materials were largely developed in Sarawak.
The course is available on a full-time basis and students can finish the degree in a minimum of three years (six semesters). There are two intakes each year – in March and July. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to choose career paths in the civil service, media, education, human rights commissions, as well as non-governmental and welfare organisations.
Master of Policy Sciences
This course leads to the awarding of a Master in Policy Sciences. It has several exit options: Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma respectively. The programme is designed in the present fashion to accommodate the hectic work demands of working adults who may need to exit the programme for one reason or another. The course structure is the result of close collaboration with the Sarawak public service and internationally recognised best practices.
The introduction of the course is in tandem with the government’s move to transform the public service in Malaysia. It allows students to acquire in-depth knowledge in the core areas of policy analysis and management in the public sector, and develop a framework which emphasises policy formulation, implementation and evaluation within the public sector.
The course is taught by teaching staff with extensive experience in policy sciences and offers considerable flexibility for students with part-time classes conducted on weekends with minimal interruption to work.
Entry requirements include a Bachelors degree in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution and the satisfying of the English requirements of the university. All applications for recognition of prior learning can be considered on an individual basis.
The course can be completed over 18 months of full time study or equivalent part time study with classes being conducted on weekends. Intakes are in January, May and August each year and the course is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Modern Management in Kuching.
