Free dental check-ups at JCLA booth during Curtin Sarawak Open Day

Miri – 14 September 2012 – The John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) and Miri Polyclinic will be opening a mobile dental booth at the Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2012, which will be held at the Curtin Sarawak campus from 10 am to 5 pm tomorrow.

The collaboration is part of the JCLA’s ‘The Forgotten Smiles’ project aimed at improving the dental health and hygiene of the Penan community in the interior, in addition to raising public awareness, particularly  amongst urban Malaysians, of the plight of the Penans.

The project is being championed by five JCLA ambassadors, namely third-year electrical power engineering student Esther Ling, 21; third-year mechanical engineering student Aaron Leong, 25; second-year chemical engineering students Joyce Wong, 21 and Kristy Nyagang, 21; and third-year chemical engineering student Sarven Shan, 23.

The ambassadors hope to raise awareness of the plight of the Penan and inspire them to support the community.

Visitors to the Curtin Sarawak Open Day 2012 are invited to visit the JCLA booth at the event’s ‘Student Support Services Showcase’ to support the project. In addition to offering dental check-ups, the JCLA will also be showcasing their projects and sell T-shirts and bookmarks to raise funds for ‘The Forgotten Smiles’ project.
