One month to go to 7th CUTSE Conference

Miri – 12 October 2012 – It is just one month to go to the 7th Curtin University of Technology Science and Engineering (CUTSE) Conference, which will be held on the campus of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) here on 6 and 7 November 2012.

It is being organised by the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering of the School of Engineering and Science at the university in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Miri Branch.

According conference chair Dr. Tang Fu Ee, who is the head of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, the conference themed ‘Engineering Goes Green’ is likely to see interesting and lively presentations on the tremendous strides made in engineering and the sciences towards achieving a more sustainable development globally.

He said the CUTSE Conference is an effective platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and information on the latest developments and innovation in the field of engineering and the sciences.

Researchers, engineers, scientists, academicians, industry professionals and students gather to share their research findings and initiate collaboration in their respective fields. Parallel sessions for mechanical, electrical, computer, civil and chemical engineering as well as the sciences will be hosted over the two days.

Each year, the conference attracts participation from a number of countries in addition to Malaysia and Australia. Last year’s conference saw the participation of 134 participants representing 21 countries and 140 papers were presented.

Federal Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Dato’ Sri Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui will officiate at the conference opening, and two prominent figures from industry and academia will be keynote speakers.

Curtin Sarawak’s Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Professor Ian Kerr commented that the conference theme is an apt one as the state of the environment and sustainable development are among the world’s most pressing issues.

“Academia and industry certainly have a role to play in addressing these issues. Conferences such as the CUTSE Conference provide a forum for researchers, engineers, scientists, industry professionals, academicians and students to share their R&D findings and encourage further collaborative research into green technology,” he said.

Professor Kerr noted that submissions of research papers to the conference have been substantial and that attendance will be significant, saying that these are very positive indications that the conference will be a success.

He is also noted that the conference will not only involve academics of the university, but also its final year students from all engineering disciplines.

“The CUTSE Conference is an excellent platform for our students to present their research projects and get valuable feedback from industry professionals. Their participation should be continually encouraged,” said Professor Kerr.

He added that it will greatly enrich their learning experience, help them achieve Curtin’s graduate attributes, and further prepare them for employment in industry upon graduation.

Papers on a variety of topics of interest, including environment, energy and resources; structures, materials and manufacturing; systems and control; mechatronics and ICT; and engineering science fundamentals, will be presented during the conference.

The refereed conference proceedings will be published on CD-ROM and distributed to all registered participants at the conference. An award would be presented for the best paper.

Furthermore, selected papers will be published in special issues of a number of journals indexed by Scopus, including World Academy of Science, Engineering + Technology (WASET), Pertanika, and Global Journal of Technology and Optimisation.

The selection of the papers for publication will be carried out during the review process as well as at the conference presentation stage, and the final decision will be made based on peer review reports by guest editors and the Editor-in-Chief.

The conference is being sponsored by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water; Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Malaysia) Limited, Shin Yang Shipping Corporation Berhad, and Miri City Council.
