Over 500 Curtin Malaysia students attend FTES briefing to secure free tertiary education benefits
Posted date:Miri, Sarawak – 8 June 2026 – More than 500 eligible students attended a briefing on the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), reflecting strong interest in the Sarawak government’s landmark initiative aimed at expanding access to higher education.
Organised by Curtin Malaysia, the session provided the students with essential information on the implementation of the FTES and how they can benefit from the scheme as they pursue their academic goals.
The briefing was attended by members of Curtin Malaysia’s senior management team, including Senior Director of Future Students and External Engagement, Debora Caroline, and Manager of Student Services, Audrey Ruby Palance.
A key highlight of the event was a comprehensive presentation by Watson Chunggat anak Leonard Doo, Deputy Director (Education) of Yayasan Sarawak, who outlined the objectives, scope and application processes of the FTES. The students received detailed guidance on eligibility requirements, benefit coverage, required documentation and the steps needed to maintain their entitlement under the scheme.
The session also featured an interactive question-and-answer segment, giving the students the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from Yayasan Sarawak and seek clarification on individual concerns relating to eligibility, academic requirements and application procedures.
Speaking after the event, Debora said the overwhelming response demonstrated the importance of the FTES to students and their families.
“The turnout reflects the strong interest among our students in understanding and accessing the opportunities made available through the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme. Initiatives such as this briefing ensure that students receive accurate information and the support they need to make informed decisions about their educational future,” she said.
She added that Curtin Malaysia remains committed to working closely with government agencies and stakeholders to ensure Curtin Malaysia’s students can fully benefit from educational initiatives designed to enhance access, affordability and academic success.
