Public and students invited to STEM Trailblazers Sarawak event at Curtin Malaysia

Miri – 4 July 2023 – Members of the public and students in Miri are invited to the state-level STEM Trailblazers Sarawak Powered by Pi event being held at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) from 6 to 8 July 2023 to witness how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is shaping the world around us.

Organised by the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD) and co-hosted by Curtin Malaysia and Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus simultaneously in Miri and Kuching, the event aims to celebrate how STEM is transforming innovation, education and industry. It will provide an immersive experience through interactive exhibits to demonstrations, workshops, talks, and hands-on activities that will engage attendees of all ages.

Open from 9 am to 5 pm, it will be held in the Recreation & Event Centre at Curtin Malaysia and admission is free. Running concurrently with the STEM Trailblazers Sarawak will be the Raspberry Pi Innovation Challenge, STEM Science Challenge, and Curtin Malaysia Open Day 2023 organised by the university to make it an exceptionally eventful three-day experience.

Among the highlights of the STEM Trailblazers Sarawak will be talks by inspiring keynote speakers from academia, industry and government, who will share their experiences, insights, and visions for the future.

They will include Asha Devi Kaushal (Principal Assistant Secretary, MEITD), Assoc. Prof. Ivan Yap Kok Seng (Chief Executive Officer, Sarawak Infectious Diseases Centre), Ts. Dr. Peter Morin Nissom (General Manager, Sarawak Research and Development Council), Dr. Faustina Elfrida Sangok (Research Officer, Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute), Tan Sri Mazlan Othman (Senior Fellow, Academy of Sciences Malaysia), Barbara Anak Ngikoh (Research Officer, Sarawak Biodiversity Centre), Ir. Allen Liew Than Ho (Director, IoT Solutions and Service, SAINS), and Dr. Siew Eng Hui (Deputy General Manager (Sustainability Division), Press Metal Bintulu Sdn. Bhd.).

There will also be a special session with Datuk Dr. Annuar Rapa’ee, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, as well as a sharing session with Team Change Maker, the NASA Space Apps Global Winners for 2021 from Sarawak.

In addition, there will be exciting exhibits where attendees can learn more about the latest advancements in STEM. They will include over 20 showcases by various STEM and technology-related agencies including Science on Wheels and the Sultan Iskandar Planetarium, and industry; 20 showcases from the faculties and academic clubs of Curtin Malaysia; and 13 Raspberry Pi Innovation Challenge and 41 STEM Trailblazers Sarawak exhibits from schools throughout Northern Sarawak.

There will also be interactive workshops facilitated by leading professionals and educators designed to spark curiosity and encourage active learning, including an Embedded System Workshop, Drone Workshop and Challenge, Human Computer Interface Workshop, Trailblazers Structural Challenge, loT Monitoring Workshop and Challenge, and Introduction to Cyber Security Workshop.

“The STEM Trailblazers Sarawak at Curtin Malaysia offers opportunities for those interested in STEM to connect with like-minded individuals, professionals, and enthusiasts,” said Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Prof. Simon Leunig.

“There will be interactive and fun activities for all ages. Whether you are a student, educator, professional, or simply someone interested in the exciting world of STEM, the event promises to be an informative and inspiring experience.”

Meanwhile, the Curtin Malaysia Open Day 2023 will feature a Future Students Hub where potential students can enquire about courses and scholarships at Curtin Malaysia and join guided tours of the campus, as well as faculty showcases, industry partner showcases, food and retail booths, interactive games and activities, and live entertainment. It will be open from 10 am to 3 pm on 6 and 7 July, and from 10 am to 4 pm on 8 July.
