SMK Marudi views facilities in Curtin Sarawak

MIRI, 14 June 2006 – Sekolah Menengah Kerajaan (SMK) Marudi comprising of 22 prefects accompanied by 5 teachers visited Curtin Sarawak campus on 6 June 2006.

Mr Juren, Headmaster of SMK Marudi explained that the visit was to introduce Curtin Sarawak to their students to pursue their tertiary education upon completion of their Form 5 and 6 exams, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) as Curtin Sarawak offers identical degrees to the main campus in Curtin Western Australia.

He said, “The visit to Curtin Sarawak Campus is also to further inspire the students to excel in their upcoming exams and especially to view the state-of-the-art purpose-built campus in a garden and the lovely lakes.  The students are fascinated with the stylish architecturally designed buildings and the modern facilities found here”.

During their visit, the students were given the opportunity to view the laboratories and library that complements the state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and the sophisticated IT linkages at Curtin Sarawak campus.

Earlier, students were shown the Curtin Sarawak corporate video highlighting the history and overview of Curtin Sarawak, the first offshore campus for Curtin University of Technology Australia.

SMK Marudi constitutes one of the rural schools in Miri offering education until Form 6 with a number of students from the neighbouring villages.

Curtin Sarawak was established in February 1999 in partnership with the Sarawak Government, it is the first offshore campus of the Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia and also the first foreign university campus to be set up in East Malaysia. In November 1999, Curtin Sarawak was awarded the Multimedia Super Corridor status. In December 2004, Curtin Sarawak was awarded the prestigious IRPA grant (Intensification of Research in Priority Areas) from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
