Students from SMK Luar Bandar Miri and SMK Pujut enjoy Fun Day at Curtin Malaysia

Miri – 26 October 2023 – The Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) organised a delightful ‘Fun Day’ event at its campus, welcoming 150 students from SMK Luar Bandar Miri and SMK Pujut. The event provided a unique opportunity for the students to engage in a range of interactive activities aimed at enriching their educational experience and igniting their curiosity.

The event’s highlights included a food fair, and academic booths showcasing the different departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences. The students also participated in engaging talks and workshops and activities organised to introduce them to various aspects of the humanities and health sciences, providing them with a glimpse of potential academic and career paths.

During media workshops facilitated by Curtin Bachelor of Communications students, the visiting students learned how to use industry-standard cameras used in filming production and practiced conducting live interviews in the Faculty’s industry-standard radio conti to give them a taste of what it is like to be TV and radio content creators.

The students also attended a psychology talk by senior lecturer in psychological science, Dr. Adeline Wong, about how people make meaning of the world and their interactions in the environments in which they live and work.

Later, they interacted with three external speakers, Loh Ming Hua, Methushael Anak Spit and Serena Robinson from the Miri Occupational Safety & Health Practitioners’ Society, who imparted the relevance of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, the international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.

In addition, fun and educational games were also conducted to stimulate teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, and they had the chance to interact with academic staff and current students of the Faculty, allowing them to ask questions and learn about academic life.

Curtin Malaysia’s Domestic Student Recruitment team was also on hand for an information session, where they introduced the students to programmes available at Curtin Malaysia, and the diverse career opportunities in various disciplines.

Interim Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, Professor Vincent Lee Chieng Chen, said Curtin Malaysia is committed to fostering a spirit of learning, curiosity, and engagement among students in the local community, and the Fun Day event was a testament to this commitment. It was an excellent opportunity for the students to experience the excitement of higher education and discover new possibilities in the fields of humanities and health sciences.

“I am happy that our academic staff and students could take a break from their teaching and learning routines to engage and interact with students of the two schools. It was interesting to have students of a school located relatively far from our campus, and one that is relatively near, coming together for an event here,” he remarked.

Domestic Student Recruitment Assistant Manager Samson Philip also complimented the faculty members for taking the time to host the Fun Day that integrated many interesting and fun activities, and offered both academic and industry perspectives.

Meanwhile, organising chairperson for the Fun Day, Dr. Ngu Ik Ying, commented, “We hope this event will ignite their passion for learning and inspire their future academic and career choices.”

The Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences offers Curtin’s Bachelor of Communications, Bachelor of Science in Psychological Science, Bachelor of Science in Health, Safety and Environment, and Bachelor of Applied Science (Hons.) in Construction Management, in addition to postgraduate studies in Project Management and Public Health.
