Miri – 8 August 2011 – Six students of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) are set to take part in the Youth Challenge 2011‘Cultivate Your Entrepreneurship Skills’ competition organised by Perdana College, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM, Skudai) this month.

The Youth Challenge 2011 is an elimination-style business and entrepreneurship-based competition aimed at cultivating and testing students’ leadership, creative thinking, communication, teamwork and adaptability skills.

It provides participating students an opportunity to network with their peers from other institutions of higher learning, as well as exposes them to challenges they might face in their future careers.

Curtin Sarawak, which is the sole representative from East Malaysia, will be represented by Banking and Finance students Lim Bee Yen, Vincent Wong Kai Seng and Fong Teck Onn, Accounting and Entrepreneurship student Wei Li Ng, Business Administration student Natalie Dindung Ngumbang Kadir and Finance and Management student Nur Azurin Hassim.

A total of 10 teams from public and private higher institutions throughout Malaysia will take part in the competition, which will run from 6 to 14 August 2011 and consist of three legs in four different locations, beginning in Kuala Lumpur, followed by Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, and finally, the UTM main campus in Skudai, Johor.

Participating teams must make it through all the elimination rounds to qualify for the final. The judging and elimination processes will be determined by guest judges from well-known companies across the country.

When asked about the Curtin Sarawak team’s strategy and preparation for the competition, Natalie said the team members read up on as much local and international business news as they could to keep up to date on the latest developments and trends.

Teammate Vincent, meanwhile, said the team hopes to gain valuable experience and improve on their business and entrepreneurial skills at the competition.

At a briefing before their departure for the competition, the Dean of Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business, Shamsul Kamariah Abdullah, wished the students all the best and hoped they would fully utilise the analytical thinking, communication, professional and teamwork skills they have picked up or developed through their entire classroom engagement to complete the tasks assigned during the competition.
