Teams invited to join Curtin Volleyball Open Tournament

Miri – 22 March 2012 – The Curtin Volleyball Club (CVC) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will soon be hosting its Curtin Volleyball Open Tournament with matches between 2 pm and 9 pm every weekend from 14 to 29 April 2012.

The tournament, which will be held at Pei Min Middle School, aims to widen the networking opportunities between local volleyball players and the Miri Volleyball Association as well as enhance the players’ game skills.

Participation in the tournament is open to residents of Miri, including students and staff of Curtin Sarawak, students of other educational institutions and working adults. Each participating team is required to pay a RM350 registration fee, which includes tournament T-shirts for their team members. Registration is open from 14 to 31 March 2012.

Exciting prizes await the champion and runners-up, including trophies, medals and cash prizes. There will also be special prizes for individual players.

The Curtin Volleyball Club has organised numerous volleyball tournaments and leagues involving students of Curtin Sarawak in the past but this is the first open to the public. Last year, the club organised the 2nd Season Curtin Volleyball Champion Challenge 2011 for institutions of higher learning in Miri, in which Institut Latihan Perindustrian (ILP) emerged the winner.

The Curtin Volleyball Club is one of several student sport clubs at Curtin Sarawak, which include clubs for wushu, karate, cricket, taekwondo, bowling, fencing, football, rugby, Frisbee, basketball and netball. Altogether, the university has some 30 student clubs and voluntary organisations, which cater to a wide range of academic, social, sports and recreational interests.

In addition to volleyball, the university has facilities for football, rugby, cricket, tennis, basketball, badminton, futsal and netball, as well as a gymnasium.

Students also get to experience a unique international and cross-cultural environment with students and staff from more than 40 countries on campus.
