Loads of fun in store for children at Curtin Open Day 2010

Miri – 13 September 2010 – Children visiting Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak)’s Curtin Open Day this Saturday (18 September 2010) will get to enjoy a variety of fun activities, games and competitions throughout the day. It promises to be quite an experience and must-visit for children of all ages.

The large event hall of the university’s multipurpose Recreation & Event Centre will be transformed into a jungle-themed Kiddies’ Corner, which will host a number of attractions, including clowns and mascots, a children’s fancy dress contest, colouring contest, ice-cream eating competition, spelling bee, and a variety of children’s games.

Attractive prizes will be presented to the winners of the various activities and games.

In addition, there will be a Hobby Corner offering fun activities like face painting and an indoor playground with a bouncy castle and toys, as well as an Animal Corner featuring a variety of household pets.

The fun starts at 10.00 am with an introduction to the clowns and mascots, followed by the Kids’ Fancy Dress Contest at 10.30 am.

The Colouring Contest will be carried out in two sessions for different age categories, at 11.30 am (for children aged 9 years old and below) and at 1.30 pm (for those between 10 and 12 years of age). Registration will begin one hour before each session. All participants are reminded to bring their own coloured pencils.

The Ice-Cream Eating Competition, meanwhile, will be held at 12.30 pm, and the Spelling Bee at 2.30 pm.

Curtin Open Day is the occasion each year when Curtin Sarawak throws open its doors, inviting the local community to visit its campus and spend the day enjoying a variety of interesting activities in a truly festive and fun atmosphere.

It is also an opportunity for the university to show the people of Miri its sincere appreciation of their continued support, and give back to the community through charitable and community-based activities tied to the event.

Themed ‘Get Curious!’, it will feature several attractions. They include a Technology & Innovation Exhibition showcasing some of the newest, cutting edge and most interesting research across all areas of Curtin Sarawak as well as fun interactive games and activities.

There will be a Kite Festival for charity sponsored by the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), and a ‘Charity & Community Corner’ where charitable organisations will promote their causes. A blood donation drive and free health checks will also be conducted.

Those interested to gain firsthand knowledge about Curtin Sarawak’s programmes and facilities can visit the Future Students Booth during the event.

Other attractions will include food and beverage stalls, games and activity stalls, product displays and retail booths, live musical performances, dance and cultural performances,  hairstyling and fashion shows, a Mr & Miss Curtin Contest, Curtin Idol Competition and an International Culture Exhibition.

Curtin Open Day 2010 is also being promoted as a ‘green’ event in support of Miri’s onjectove of becoming the country’s first ‘green city’, as well as to promote Curtin Sarawak’s ‘Go Green!’ environmental initiatives. The Miri City Council, the driving force behind the ‘green city’ campaign, is supporting the event.

The event organisers are promoting recycling by urging visitors to bring along the event’s promotional flyers and newspaper pages with the event advertisements to redeem environment-friendly non-woven shopping bags with the event logo.

Flyers will be mass-mailed to residences throughout Miri this week and advertisements have appeared in selected local dailies over the past few weeks. The flyers and newsprint will be sent for recycling later.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own shopping bags and recyclable food containers to minimise the use of plastic bags and styrofoam containers on the day.
