Professor Alistair Inglis is new Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak

Miri – 17 December 2010 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) has appointed Professor Alistair Inglis as its new Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Inglis, who assumed the position on 8 November 2010, has had a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years. He has held academic and administrative positions in leading Australian educational institutions including the University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, RMIT University and Victoria University.

His most recently-held position was as Head of the Melton Campus of Victoria University. Prior to that, he was Head of the University’s Sunbury Campus. He had also held the position of Senior Lecturer in Flexible Learning in the University’s central unit responsible for academic staff development.

His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science from the University of Queensland, Master of Applied Sciences (Science Education) from Curtin University, and a PhD (Education) from Monash University.

His career has been in central academic development units where he has worked mainly in the fields of distance education and online learning. He is currently Deputy Editor of the leading international research journal, Distance Education. However, recently he his work has been more involved with on-campus teaching.

His teaching and research interests lie in distance education, information and communications technology in higher education; the design of curriculum and learning materials, and development of quality processes.

Professor Inglis takes over the position from Professor Joan Gribble, who returned to Curtin’s main Bentley Campus in Perth after four years in Sarawak to assume the position of Director of Quality Enhancement at the university’s Office of Strategy & Planning.

In his new role, Professor Inglis will be responsible for oversight of the academic programmes, and also for Student Services, the Library, University Life and Staff and Student and Staff Affairs.

Very much a results-oriented educator and administrator, Professor Inglis’ immediate focus is on improving the university’s systems and processes, strengthening the academic programmes and planning for new developments at the campus, including the expansion of the campus library that is scheduled to take place in 2012.

Professor Inglis sees a bright future for Curtin Sarawak. “Curtin Sarawak’s potential to contribute to the Sarawak community through provision of education and training opportunities, research and development, and direct engagement with industry and with community organisations gives it an assured future as it plays an increasingly important part in the development of the state” he said.
