2nd Borneo Engineering Symposium open for registration

Miri – 5 December 2013 – Registration for the 2nd Borneo Engineering Symposium to be hosted by Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) in the Auditorium, Pustaka Negeri in Kuching, Sarawak on 17 December 2013 is now open. Themed ‘Design of Steel and Composite Structures to Eurocodes’, the symposium follows the success of the 1st Borneo Engineering Symposium held last year which was attended by more than 100 participants.

This year’s symposium is being co-organised with the Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong and in collaboration with The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).

It is being sponsored by BlueScope Steel (M) Sdn. Bhd., United G.I. Products Sdn. Bhd. and EcoSteel Sdn. Bhd.

BlueScope Steel Malaysia is the only local manufacturer of ZINCALUME® steel and TRUECORE® zinc/aluminium alloy-coated steel and Clean COLORBOND® pre-painted steel. United G.I. Products Sdn. Bhd. (UGI) is a Malaysian company manufacturing steel roofing sheets, welded steel wire mesh and galvanised steel purlin and is a distributor of building products such as Rockwool. Kuching-based EcoSteel Sdn. Bhd., meanwhile, provides comprehensive steel structural and architectural building solutions supporting the needs of the local construction industry.

Internationally renowned researchers from universities and professionals from industry have been invited to the symposium. They include Professor Ben Young from the University of Hong Kong (HKU); Professor Dennis Lam from the University of Bradford, United Kingdom; Associate Professor Lau Hieng Ho from Curtin Sarawak; Associate Professor Chan Tak Ming from Warwick University, United Kingdom; and Mr. Mei Chee Chiang from EcoSteel Sdn. Bhd.

Professor Young is currently the Assistant Dean and Programme Director (Outreach) at HKU and a professor of structural engineering in its Department of Civil Engineering. He was among the authors of the ‘Hong Kong Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel’ for the Hong Kong Government’s Buildings Department, and was involved in the development of the Singaporean standard for ’Cold-formed Welded Steel Structural Hollow Sections’ for the Productivity and Standards Board of Singapore.

Professor Dennis Lam, meanwhile, is the Chair of Structural Engineering in the School of Engineering, Design & Technology and the Director of Bradford Centre for Sustainable Environments at the University of Bradford and was formerly Chief Structural Engineer for the City of Wakefield. He is a Chartered Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He is the European Editor-in-Chief for Steel & Composite Structures and serves on the editorial boards of five other international journals in structural engineering and is a member of the British Standard Institute Committee, B525 and European Standard Committee, CEN/T250/SC4 responsible for the BS5950 and Eurocode 4.

Associate Professor Lau Hieng Ho is Deputy Dean of the School of Engineering & Science at Curtin Sarawak. He has been carrying out research on cold-formed steel for many years, including studies of cold-formed steel built-up sections, connections and corrosion. He is also a professional engineer (PEng) registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

Dr. Chan Tak Ming is an Associate Professor in Structural Engineering at the University of Warwick. He started his structural engineering career by joining Arup as a Graduate Structural Engineer. He is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, committee member of the UK mirror group for Eurocode 3 and the Education and Training committee of the Hong Kong Constructional Metal Structures Association. He is also currently a member of the Structures and Buildings (Proceedings of the ICE) Editorial Panel.

Mr. Mei Chee Chiang is the founder and Managing Director of EcoSteel Sdn. Bhd. He has had 18 years of working experience in the construction industry, 16 of which were with an engineering consultancy firm.

The Borneo Engineering Symposium is designed for engineers, contractors, and manufacturers of steel and composite structure’s products as well as structural steelworks and concrete designers who wish to gain a good understanding of the design of steel and composite structures according to Eurocodes. It is also relevant for those who wish to keep abreast with recent development in the use of Eurocodes.

Registration is open to all, and the fee (inclusive of 2 coffee breaks and lunch) is RM350 for IEM members/government officers and RM450 for non-members.

A group discount rate is also available. Groups of three persons from the same organisation registering concurrently will be entitled to a fee of RM300 per person on condition one is an IEM member.

Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and limited to the first 100 participants only. The symposium is awarded 8.0 CPD hours by The Institution of Engineers Malaysia – Reference Number IEM/13/PP/046/S.
