Curtin Sarawak academic receives adjunct professorship from China

Miri – 18 December 2013 – Academics of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) have achieved a number of milestones this year, the latest being Dr. Ujjal Kumar Ghosh, who has been honoured with a 3-year adjunct professorship from the School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Hebei University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Ujjal is a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science. He recently visited HEBUST as a visiting professor to assist final-year chemical engineering students there in the field of chemical reaction engineering as well as perform collaborative research work on greenhouse gas capture technologies with academics at the university.

He is also developing long-term research collaboration and academic links between the School of Engineering and Science and HEBUST’s School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering to be cemented with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future.

Located in Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei province, Hebei University of Science and Technology (HEBUST) has some 20,000 local and international undergraduate and postgraduate students. Curtin Sarawak, meanwhile, is Curtin University’s largest international campus with over 3,500 students from over 40 countries.

In praising Dr. Ujjal’s teaching, Professor Xinyu Rong, Deputy Dean of School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering of HEBUST, said Dr. Ujjal’s teaching methods are both flexible and effective.

Meanwhile, Professor Yifeng Yu, Dean of School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering commented that he holds Curtin Sarawak in high regard, adding that the conferment of adjunct professorship to Dr. Ujjal will help enhance the relationship between Curtin Sarawak and HEBUST.

Dr. Ujjal received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India and has worked with the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technology (CO2CRC), University of Melbourne, Australia on carbon dioxide sequestration. During his work with the university, Dr. Ujjal was awarded the ‘Early Career Symposium Fellowship’ by Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE).

Last year, Dr. Ujjal received the Chemcon Distinguished Speaker (CDS) award from the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) in recognition of his contribution to research in greenhouse gas capture and membrane-based separation processes for wastewater treatment.

He is presently collaborating with an academic from University Malaya on a high impact research project worth more than RM2 million funded by University Malaya and the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education.
