Academics, students and public to benefit from workshop and talks at Curtin Sarawak
Posted date:Miri – 10 May 2013 – Academics of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will get an introduction to team-based learning from an expert in the field at a workshop entitled ‘What is TeamLEAD at Duke-NUS?’ at the Curtin Sarawak campus today.
Organised by the Office of Teaching and Learning at Curtin Sarawak, the workshop will be facilitated by Robert K. Kamei, MD, the Vice Dean of Education at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and the man behind its highly successful TeamLEAD programme.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Kamei has an undergraduate degree in Human Biology from Stanford University and a medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He subsequently pursued internship and residency training in paediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
After several years in primary care paediatric practice, he returned to UCSF where he served on the faculty. He was named as director of paediatric residency training in 1990 and continued in this position until accepting the position at Duke-NUS in 2006.
While he was director of residency training, the UCSF programme grew from 45 to 89 residents and expanded from 2 to 5 major clinical teaching sites. Under his leadership, the programme developed into a highly innovative educational training programme, with several publications describing many of these creative efforts.
In 2000, he was the recipient of a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to provide faculty development for academicians teaching medicine in Indonesia. During his sabbatical year, he travelled extensively throughout Indonesia and Southeast Asia to lecture and lead discussions on contemporary medical education teaching and evaluation techniques.
Dr. Kamei has held many different leadership positions in the Association of Paediatric Program Directors and the American Board of Paediatrics, and holds membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha medical society.
Meanwhile, Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business will be hosting an industry talk entitled ‘Can We Segment 7 Billion People? The role of mobility, social media and customer experience in targeting the right audience’ for its students and staff, as well as interested members of the public, on 16 May 2013.
The talk will be by Harith Menon, Head of Asia Pacific, CEF Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Nokia Siemens Networks.
Since April 2007, Harith has taken on various leadership roles for customer and industry relationship and marketing activities. Together with his Marketing and Corporate Affairs team at Nokia Siemens Networks, he is responsible for all customer, industry, media, and internal marketing and communications activities in the region.
He was previously the Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Indonesia and Asia South (Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Sri Lanka) and was part of the Nokia Regional Marketing team based in Malaysia where he was Head of Marketing for India and Indonesia while supporting Market Development for Asia Pacific until April 2007. He has worked with Nokia while living in Taiwan and Thailand leading network and services solutions sales from 1999 to 2004. Harith has previously held Senior Engineer positions with Telekom Malaysia and Time Telekom driving early value-added service and prepaid launches in Malaysia.
On the following day, the School of Business’ Department of Economics and Finance will host a guest lecture on ‘The Objectives and Formulation of the Monetary Policy in Malaysia’ by Mohd. Nozlan Khadri, Deputy Director, Financial and Fiscal Surveillance and Research of Bank Negara’s Department of Monetary Assessment and Strategy.
This guest lecture, like the earlier talk, will be open to both academics and students of Curtin Sarawak, as well as members of the public.
Mohd. Nozlan, who holds a Master in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, has been with Bank Negara for 12 years and is currently the acting deputy director for financial and fiscal surveillance and research in its Monetary Assessment and Strategy Department.
He is responsible for providing analysis, advice and research on the developments in financial markets, and issues related to public finance. In addition to his current responsibilities, his expertise includes surveillance and research in the area of prices and inflation, as well as exchange rates and capital flows.
Mohd. Nozln’s talk will be on the importance of price stability, the central bank mandate and the role of monetary policy towards achieving price stability. There will also be a discussion on current issues that are relevant to the conduct of the monetary policy in Malaysia.
