AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter hosts leadership seminar

Miri – 4 November 2013 – Over 60 delegates recently attended the Curtin University Local Leadership Development Seminar (CULLDS) hosted by the AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter at the Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) campus here.

It was well attended by members from the AIESEC chapters of Curtin Sarawak and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and facilitated by 11 AIESEC committee members from The University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus; Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Taylor’s University.

The objectives of the seminar themed ‘The reel of dreams’ were to develop better understanding of AIESEC, develop knowledge and leadership skills among the delegates, and motivate them to contribute continuously to the organisation.

It also aimed to emphasise the importance of teamwork and synergies between the departments in AIESEC as well as enhance member engagement between the Executive Board members and team members in the AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter Local Committee.

According to Organising Chairperson (Delegate Servicing) Joanna Thein Chuk Wai, the seminar was a good platform for boosting one’s confidence level.

“Previously, I didn’t think I belonged in AIESEC as I’m an extrovert, but because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and make new friends, I joined the seminar. It was definitely an inspiring one,” said Thein.

Facilitator Aaron Ng from Universiti Malaysia Pahang remarked that he never imagined he would be helping facilitate a local conference. Fellow facilitator Lim Suang Fu from The University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus said she was honoured to be involved in the seminar and help develop AIESEC in East Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Isaac Ng who represented Curtin Sarawak said that, initially, he was reluctant to join the seminar as it happened during tuition-free week. However, he was glad that he did as he learned a lot from the delegates and felt more motivated than ever.

Liang Jian Zhang, a delegate from UNIMAS opined that attending the seminar was not only about making new friends but getting to know inspiring individuals.

Curtin Sarawak was the first higher education institution in East Malaysia to have an AIESEC chapter. AIESEC has some 60 years’ experience in providing avenues for youth leadership development. With over 60,000 members from more than 110 countries, it allows young people to participate in leadership and internship opportunities in a global learning environment and is entirely run by youth for youth.
