Chemical engineering lecturer wins 2010 Curtin Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award

Miri – 18 October 2010 – Chemical engineering senior lecturer Tan Yin Ling of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) was recently awarded the 2010 Curtin Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award (Early Career) by Curtin University in Western Australia.

The prestigious award, which is granted at the discretion of the Curtin Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award (EIT) Committee, recognises Curtin’s academics at both Curtin’s mother campus and international branch campuses for outstanding performance in teaching and enhancing students’ learning.

The EIT Award has also established its reputation at national level in Australia in the Australian Learning and Teaching Council Awards – the country’s most prestigious teaching awards, recognising outstanding academicians where Curtin nominees are consistently shortlisted and recognised as the most outstanding candidates.

According to Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin Sarawak, Professor Ian Kerr, Tan was selected based on her constructivist approach to teaching and learning.

“Yin Ling was able to demonstrate her exceptional teaching and learning achievements in her application to the review committee, which recommended her to receive the award. We are indeed proud that she is a recipient of the award this year,” Professor Kerr said.

Last year’s award was also won by a chemical engineering lecturer, Lau Shiew Wei. The awarding of the 2010 Curtin Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award to Tan once again underscores the high quality of teaching and learning at Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science and at Curtin Sarawak as a whole.
