Chemical Engineering Student Club welcomes new members

Miri – 29 August 2013 – The Chemical Engineering Student Club (CESC) of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently welcomed over 50 new student members from different disciplines at a welcoming party it organised on campus.

The CESC organises welcoming parties at the start of each new semester to introduce new members to the club, as well as meet and network with existing members and staff of the university’s Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

Present at the event were the head of the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Associate Professor Chua Han Bing, and the advisor to the CESC, Associate Professor Perumal Kumar.

In his welcoming speech, Associate Professor Chua encouraged both the old and new members to get involved in all the club’s activities.

“University life is not just about excelling in your studies. Social involvement through club activities will contribute towards a wholesome university experience,” he said.

According to Associate Professor Perumal in his speech, participation in club activities helps students attain the Curtin Graduate Attributes, that is, the ability to apply discipline knowledge, principles and concepts; think critically, creatively and reflectively; access, evaluate and synthesise information; communicate effectively; use technologies appropriately; utilise lifelong learning skills; recognise and apply international perspectives; demonstrate intercultural awareness and understanding, and apply professional skills.

Following the two speeches, CESC president Eve Phyu spoke on the various aspects of the club and its future directions. Later, the members participated in games intended to break the ice and build camaraderie.

Club member Jonathan Thien, who found the event most enjoyable, commented that it gave him the opportunity to make new friends and that he will definitely join the next semester’s welcoming party.
