Club exhibition gets great response

Miri – 11 April 2013 – Let’s Club-In, an exhibition of student clubs at Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) on 27 and 28 March 2013 proved a huge success, attracting over 800 students of the university keen to support their clubs or find out more about the over 50 clubs on campus throughout the two days.

Organised by the Student Council and held at the university’s Recreation and Event Centre, the main objective of the exhibition was to encourage students of the university to actively participate in its vibrant campus life through membership in student clubs. Curtin Sarawak currently has some 3,500 students from over 40 countries.

A total of 53 student clubs catering to social, environmental, recreational, sports, cultural and religious interests, as well as academic clubs affiliated to Curtin Sarawak’s schools and those under the Department of University Life’s leadership and entrepreneurship programmes, were represented at the event.

The opening ceremony was attended by Curtin Sarawak’s pro-vice chancellor and chief executive, Professor Ian Kerr; deputy pro-vice chancellor, Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia; chief operating officer, Nicholas Ching; manager of university life, Haslina Malek; and president of the Curtin Sarawak Student Council, Jude Dominic Lim.

The event highlights included a lion dance performance by the newly-formed Curtin Lion Dance Club, performances by the Arts and Dance Club and Cheerleading Club, martial arts performance by the Curtin Martial Arts Club, and a finger-style guitar performance by student Joshua Liew.

There were also lucky draws with prizes sponsored by the Department of University Life, ZenQ, T4, Optiprimus, Meritz Hotel, ParkCity Everly Hotel, Imperial Hotel, New Shanghai and Eye care.

In conjunction with the exhibition, the Curtin Rotaract Club organised an immensely popular ‘A Thousand Dreams’ project where students shared their dreams and aspirations on blackboards, listing what they would like to accomplish before graduating.

Organising chairman Wong Kah Khing is happy to note that most of the clubs that participated have seen significant increases in their memberships since the event.

Meanwhile, a few of the students who attended commented that the event was an eye-opener as they were not aware of the existence of newer clubs such as the Japan Pop Culture Club, Curtin Environmental Club and Curtin Life Club.
