Community stakeholders enlightened about educational opportunities at Curtin Malaysia

Miri – 5 March 2023 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), one of five institutions of higher learning owned by the Sarawak government through Yayasan Sarawak, is dedicated to offering high-quality education in Sarawak, Borneo, and the wider ASEAN region. It also has a broad commitment to fostering an environment of academic excellence, innovation, and impactful learning.

This was expressed by Professor Tang Fu Ee, Curtin Malaysia’s Dean of Learning & Teaching, when delivering a speech on behalf of Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig at the ‘Curtin Malaysia Information Session 2024’ for local community leaders and heads of government agencies at its campus recently.

“We open our doors to all ambitious Sarawakian students who aspire to pursue their dreams through higher education. With the support of the Sarawak government, we ensure that high-quality education is accessible to everyone without burdening their parents,” he remarked.

The event, organised by Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Domestic Student Recruitment and External Engagement, was attended by approximately 50 representatives of community associations, village security and development committees (JKKK), and various government departments and agencies in Miri. This event marked the second session for the year, following an initial session in Bintulu in February.

Prof. Tang went on to emphasise the university’s commitment to providing inclusive, innovative, and impactful education, stating, “We want to see the next generation become leaders who will bring positive change to our community, state, and country.”

He also underscored the importance of education as the key to personal and community development, opening doors to better career opportunities and laying the foundation for sustainable social and economic development. “Our community plays a vital role as a centre of education, supporting formal education in schools and universities while instilling values, ethics, and important life skills,” he said.

Expressing hope that the information session would serve as a positive step towards empowering children’s education and future, especially for Form 5 students currently preparing for the SPM exam, he extended gratitude to the attendees for their interest in learning more about the opportunities for higher education, and indirectly contributing to the development of education, in Sarawak.

After the information session, the attendees were taken on a tour of the campus to witness first-hand how Curtin Malaysia could serve as a warm and secure second home for students.
