Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering organises site visit to Wehaya Sdn Bhd for students

Miri – 23 April 2024 – The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering and Science at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently provided its students with practical insights into low and medium voltage electrical applications by organising a site visit to the Electrical Division of Wehaya Sdn. Bhd.

Organised In collaboration with the engineers at Wehaya Sdn, Bhd., a leading provider of electrical solutions in the region, the visit served as an invaluable opportunity for the students to witness firsthand the real-world applications of the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in their coursework.

During the site visit, the students had the privilege of observing and engaging with professionals in the field as they demonstrated various low and medium voltage electrical applications. From distribution transformers to switchgears and protection systems, the students gained insights into the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems crucial for various industries.

On arrival, the students and their accompanying lecturers were welcomed by the head of Wehaya Sdn. Bhd.’s Electrical Department, Khatini Jerai’ee, and the department’s senior electrical engineer, Muhammad Fakhrul Medhi.

This was followed by a briefing on the company’s operations and services to a wide range of clientele in the oil and gas industry since 1990 by operation engineer Julia Anak Jonathan. She said the Electrical Division specialises in health checks, repairs, overhauls, and rewinding of AC motors, generators, and submersible motors. The division also provides trained professionals and engineers for work in both onshore and offshore environments.

During the visit, the students observed various types of electrical equipment and motors. To showcase maintenance works, Wehaya Sdn. Bhd. workers demonstrated health screening on a motor to determine what maintenance works had to be done, followed by the dismantling and servicing the motor. At the rewinding section, the students were shown conditioning tests being carried out before the start of the rewinding process.

The students expressed their appreciation of the opportunity to witness the various demonstrations and the practical applications of concepts and theories they had learned in their course.

Student Mohd. Haziq Mohd. Daud said he was fascinated by the various industrial-scale electrical equipment, and the work that goes into screening and maintenance at Weehaya Sdn. Bhd.’s Electrical Division. Fellow student Yap Zhi Shuan, meanwhile, said he was glad for the opportunity to learn more about the workflow for troubleshooting and employers’ expectations of graduate students entering the oil and gas industry.

Lecturer of electrical and computer engineering Dr. Chew Ing Ming, who accompanied the students on the visit, said the initiative aligns with Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to providing its students with holistic learning experiences that extend beyond the confines of the classroom. By exposing students to industry practices and technologies, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, thereby preparing students for successful careers in the field of electrical engineering.

Another accompanying lecturer, Dr. Salem Mgammal Awadh Nasser Al-Ameri, commented, “We are thrilled to offer our students the opportunity to visit Wehaya Sdn. Bhd. and witness firsthand the practical applications of what they have learned in their courses.”

“We believe that experiences like these are essential in preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in their future careers.”

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering extends its gratitude to Wehaya Sdn. Bhd. for their collaboration and support in making the site visit possible, and looks forward to further opportunities to collaborate Wehaya Sdn. Bhd. on more visits for students in the coming semesters.
