Curtin Malaysia Faculty of Business conducts financial literacy seminar for Form 5 students

Miri – 22 April 2024 – The Faculty of Business at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently conducted a financial literacy seminar for Form 5 students of SMK Chung Hua Miri to equip them with essential financial literacy skills and highlight pathways to careers in accounting and finance.

The seminar, which was conducted in two sessions at the school, was in line with Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to empowering youth and preparing them for challenges and opportunities in their future careers.

The first session, facilitated by economics and finance lecturer Dr. Ivy Hii Siaw Hung from the faculty of Business’ Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics and coordinator of Faculty’s Future Student Sub-Committee, focused on financial literacy.

Dr. Hii shared her wealth of knowledge of financial literacy, offering practical tips and strategies on managing finances wisely. Through interactive discussions, she introduced the students to financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing, and debt management – the essential tools needed to make informed financial decisions.

Dr. Hii emphasised the significance of developing sound financial habits at a young age and the long-term advantages of financial responsibility. She also encouraged the students to take a proactive approach to personal finance, explore the subject further, and apply the principles learned to their daily lives.

The second session facilitated by Dr. Lynn Ling Yew Hua, an accounting lecturer and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Australia Ambassador, delved into the dynamic world of accounting.

Dr. Ling underscored the diverse and evolving roles of accountants in today’s business landscape, and discussed how the accounting profession has transformed with the advent of new digital technologies. She also highlighted the shift from traditional accounting roles to those of strategic leaders and problem solvers, illustrating the myriad of career paths available to aspiring accountants.

As a CPA Australia Ambassador, Dr. Ling gave the students insights into the professional journey through CPA Australia, outlining the opportunities that await them in the accounting and finance fields.

Dr. Hii and Dr. Ling expressed their satisfaction with the opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise with the SMK Chung Hua Miri students.

“We are thrilled at the opportunity to engage with the students and provide them insights into financial literacy and the exciting career opportunities that await them in the fields of accounting and finance,” said Dr. Ling.
