Curtin alumni to be featured in ‘Going Places with a Curtin Degree’ webinar on 4 December

Miri – 2 December 2021 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is continuing with its popular ‘Going Places with a Curtin Degree’ Live Webinar Series with a new instalment featuring three of its media and mass communications alumni who are working in various industries in Malaysia and abroad this Saturday, 4 December 2021.

The webinar, which is being hosted in collaboration with  the Curtin University Alumni Malaysia Chapter (CUAMC), will be streamed live on Curtin Malaysia’s Facebook at https://bit.ly/CurtinLiveWebinarPt7 from 2 pm to 4 pm (UTC/GMT +8).

Those attending the webinar, the seventh in the series, will learn more about the Bachelor of Communications (formerly known as the Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications) at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, as well as career opportunities in the media and communications industries, and possible career pathways one could take with such a qualification.

They will also find out what inspired the three alumni – Lanny Ho Shi, Shaikh Tahmid Hassin and Julius Tan – to choose the career paths they took, learn what they are currently doing, and how a Curtin education and degree helped them achieve success.

Ho is a radio announcer with HITZ Sarawak and a versatile voice talent and dancer. She was an extremely active student at Curtin Malaysia, joining student clubs such as the Curtin Arts and Dance Club and Curtin University Theatre Club. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Mass Communication majoring in public relations and corporate video production in 2021 and soon found the right job in broadcasting that allows her to apply all her communication skills and talents.

Shaikh Tahmid has worked with several high profile companies in the international aviation industry since graduating from Curtin Malaysia in 2018. He has worked in client services with Air France, was a logistics specialist with API, and is currently assistant operations manager with Skyhop Global in New York. He is a former athlete and member of the Bangladesh national basketball team and was highly involved in student leadership programmes during his time at Curtin Malaysia.

Tan, meanwhile, graduated from Curtin Malaysia with a Bachelor of Mass Communication in 2014. He majored in marketing and was the recipient of the 2014 Dato Sri Celestine Ujang Best Film and TV Student Award. Soon after graduating, he worked as a business journalist with Sin Chew Daily, covering economic and financial news. Within two years, he garnered two prestigious media awards, the 2015 Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Leong Hoy Kum Excellence Property Article Award and 2016 Dato’ Koh Peng Chor Excellence Finance and Economy Article Award.

Tan currently works as the lead analyst in Big Data company Ebdesk Malaysia, providing data-enabled strategic and management consultation to the public and private sectors. He is also current secretary of the CUAMC.

Moderating the webinar will be media and communications lecturer Dr. Ngu Ik Ying while CUAMC president Jane Teh will be the host.

Dr. Ngu has more than 10 years’ teaching experience with Curtin Malaysia. Before joining the university, she was a journalist with The Star, a news stringer for Malaysiakini, and occasionally contributed articles to regional Chinese newspaper United Daily News. She obtained her Masters from Universiti Sains Malaysia and PhD from Curtin University in Australia. She was a recipient of a Curtin Offshore Partner Research Scholarship and won Curtin Malaysia’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2021.

Teh graduated from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Marketing in 2002. She is currently a sales leader with Nu Skin Malaysia and also a reputable corporate trainer specialising in effective communication, management, sales and business using Lean Principles.
