Curtin Career Fair an opportunity to seek out job opportunities with leading employers
Posted date:Miri – 20 September 2010 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak)’s Curtin Career Fair 2010 from 21 to 22 September 2010 presents a grand opportunity for Curtin Sarawak students and alumni, as well job-seekers in the Miri community, to network with and seek out job opportunities with leading employers in Miri and elsewhere.
The annual event is being organised by Career & Alumni Services at Curtin Sarawak’s University Life Department and will be held in the university’s Recreation & Event Centre. It is open to all and admission is free.
University Life Manager Haslina Abdul Malek says the Curtin Career Fair provides an excellent platform to network and seek information from employers with regards to recruitment needs for now and the future.
“You might not be searching for job now, but listening to first hand information from employer is useful for mapping out your future career,” said Haslina.
She advises those who interested to attend to prepare beforehand in order to derive the maximum benefit from the fair.
“If you have researched the employers who are participating in the fair, you can target those that look like they could be a good fit for you and impress them with your genuine interest in their organisations. Students who have pertinent questions to ask tend to impress employers,” she said.
She suggests they obtain a list of participating employers from the organisers and researching them, including disciplines they are recruiting from and their company profiles. She says that although it is natural to feel nervous or not know what to say to employers, it pays to make a positive impression and show you are seriously considering career prospects with them.
Other areas worth researching include the core business of the companies, the number of positions they are recruiting for and the areas of their organisations in which the positions are located, work competencies being sought in graduates, the selection criteria for the positions, what the selection process involves and when offers will be made, and how and when to apply.
“At the Curtin Career Fair, companies that interest you the most should be your first targets, but you should also take the time to visit all the exhibitors. You never know what opportunities you may find,” added Haslina.
Job-seekers attending the fair are also advised to spend about 10 minutes at the Curtin Career Service booth and collect copies of the Career Fair Book which contains information on all the exhibitors, as well as helpful tips on what do at the fair and what action to take after the event.
As ‘first impressions count’, proper grooming and appropriate attire is also recommended to make a good impression on the participating employers.
International students studying at Curtin Sarawak are not to be left out and, as a sizeable number of the exhibitors are multinationals, they are advised to attend and meet the exhibitors to find out about job opportunities in their global locations, including Malaysia and perhaps the students’ home countries.
Participating employers include ACCA Malaysia, Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd, Certis Cisco Security Pte Ltd, Contact Singapore, CPA Australia, Dai Lieng Machinery Sdn Bhd, Daiken Miri Sdn Bhd, Folec Communication Sdn Bhd, Geoeast (M) Sdn Bhd, ING Insurance Bhd, Jabatan Tenaga Kerja Miri, Jobstreet.com, JobsCentral, KTS Group, Manpower Staffing Services (M) Sdn Bhd, Miri Marriott Resort & Spa, Out of the Box, Piasau Slipways Sdn Bhd, Press Metal Sarawak Sdn Bhd, Samling Group of Companies, Sarawak Energy Bhd, Sarawak Oil Palms Bhd, Sealink International Bhd, Shin Yang Plywood Sdn Bhd, Soonlinmas Sdn Bhd, Speedwing Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Tokuyama Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
