Curtin celebrates two milestones: Earns QS 5 Star Plus and cracks top 200 in prestigious QS Rankings
Posted date:Miri – 11 June 2021 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), the largest global campus of Curtin University located here in Malaysia, along with the University’s main campus in Perth and global campuses in Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius, are all celebrating Curtin’s latest achievements in the QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) 2022.
Curtin achieved two major milestones – achieving a QS Five Stars Plus rating, the highest available for a tertiary institution and jumping into the world’s top 200 in the prestigious global rankings. Curtin is only one of three universities in Australia to achieve the QS Five Stars Plus rating.
The result followed a comprehensive evaluation by QS across a range of areas including research, employability, teaching, facilities, internationalisation, inclusiveness and innovation. A Five Stars Plus institution must achieve five stars across all categories.
Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said the rating confirms Curtin’s excellence, agility, and resilience even in times of extraordinary change and uncertainty.
“Our performance in this QS assessment shows Curtin’s ever-growing reputation for delivering the highest standards of teaching and learning to ensure all students achieve their potential and maximise opportunities during their time at university,” Professor Hayne said.
Curtin also rose 23 places from last year to be ranked 194th globally, and 11th in Australia in the prestigious QSWUR which evaluates the world’s top 1,300 universities based on metrics of academic reputation, employer reputation, research performance and internationalisation.
Professor Hayne said Curtin’s sustained climb since 2006 is underpinned by the University’s commitment to excellence in research, teaching and impactful industry engagement. It also highlights the importance of Curtin’s international footprint in Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius.
“This outstanding result cements Curtin among the world’s top institutions and demonstrates the scale of global impact the University has through our world-class teaching and research,” Professor Hayne said.
“It’s extremely encouraging to see Curtin making significant strides in these global rankings and we can be especially proud of our research impact results – which now place us well within the world’s top one percent of universities.
“Both our QS Five Stars Plus rating and QS World Ranking results are clear indicators of Curtin’s ability to harness our strengths as a global and innovative institution.”
Meanwhile, Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Simon Leunig remarked that it is very exciting to see Curtin continue its stellar rise in the global rankings.
He said the latest results will have a significant impact on Curtin Malaysia as it seeks to recruit more students from across the world and expand its regional footprint as Curtin’s education and research hub in Asia.
“As a global university with a robust One University approach and highly-integrated campuses, it reflects to a great degree on the quality and excellence at Curtin’s global campuses, particularly in the teaching, research and internationalisation components of the rankings,” said Professor Leunig.
“In Malaysia, it certainly places Curtin Malaysia in the top tier of institutions for learning environment, industry engagement and research outcomes.
“Our research performance is now particularly strong due to the exceptional work of our talented staff in both leading breakthroughs and inspiring the next generation; as well our latest investments in research infrastructure and our commitment to world-class research.
“Our continued application of new teaching technologies and innovative pedagogies, as well as our sustained focus on collaboration and a strong and expanding network of industry relationships in Malaysia has also strengthened our academic reputation and strategic partnerships.”
