Curtin Malaysia campus community comes together for breaking of fast

Miri – 29 May 2019 – Over 400 students and staff of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) got together for the breaking of fast at a ‘Grand Iftar 2019’ gathering at the university’s Recreation and Event Centre recently.

The gathering was organised by the university’s Student Services Department in collaboration with the Azman Islamic Centre (AIC) at the campus and the student-run Pakistan Society (PakSoc), Curtin Educational Excellence Facilitating Team (e-Fact) and Curtin Islamic Society (CIS).

Those attending comprised not only Muslims but students and staff of various nationalities and faiths, coming together in celebration of the campus’ cultural diversity and spirit of inclusiveness and mutual understanding. They were all feted to an eclectic array of local and international cuisine, many unique to the fasting month of Ramadan.

Mechanical engineering student Yusri Bin Zaidi said he was delighted by the efforts of the university and student clubs involved to gather the campus community for the breaking of fast together.

Meanwhile, Student Services Manager Audrey Ruby Palance said she plans to make the Iftar gathering an annual affair given the tremendous response from the campus community. She also expressed hopes that future gatherings will attract even more students and staff. Curtin Malaysia currently has over 4,000 students from over 50 countries and some 425 staff from 15 countries.

“It was nice to see so many students and staff coming together for the first time in the spirit of Ramadan al-Mubarak. It is our hope that such events will result in greater harmony and mutual understanding in our very diverse campus community,” said Audrey.

The inaugural Iftar gathering saw over 400 students and staff of the university attending.
