Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter among finalists for Best Student Chapter Award 2019

Miri – 16 August 2019 – The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Student Chapter of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has been named one of the finalists for Best Student Chapter, one of the award categories in the prestigious IChemE Malaysia Awards 2019.

For the second year, the Student Chapter Award will be awarded to the university that provides the most outstanding work in promoting the professional development and networking opportunities in the chemical engineering profession to students.

The winner of the award will be announced on 14 October 2019 during the annual IChemE Malaysia Awards Dinner to be held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

40 finalist entries stand a chance of winning a trophy for excellence and innovation in chemical, biochemical and process engineering at the awards ceremony which will be attended by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, who is a chemical engineer and Royal Patron of IChemE in Malaysia.

The other award categories are for Oil & Gas, Palm Oil, Process Safety, Sustainability, Training & Development, Young Industrialist, and Young Researcher.

Winners of the IChemE Malaysia Awards will automatically be entered into corresponding categories at the IChemE Global Awards on 7 November 2019 in Hull, United Kingdom. Winners of the Global Awards are also eligible for the overall Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering.

Dr. Christina Phang, Chair of the Board of IChemE in Malaysia, said, “The IChemE Malaysia Awards provide peer recognition of the significant achievements that chemical engineers are doing to address some of the world’s major challenges. Meanwhile, academic advisor to the Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter, Dr. Bridgid Chin, remarked that she was proud that the Curtin Malaysia IChemE Student Chapter has been chosen as one of the award finalists.

She said the student chapter is deserving of the recognition as it has done excellent work in organising industrial talks, industrial site visits, community outreach programmes and training workshops and seminars related to chemical engineering. It has also been actively involved in promoting IChemE student membership and organising team building activities for its members in recent years.

“Last year, the student chapter was selected as the Highly Commended IChemE Student Chapter, and winning the Best Student IChemE Chapter award this year would be a huge achievement for them,” said Dr. Chin.

Dr. Chin said Curtin Malaysia has a very strong association with IChemE in the areas of course accreditation, student activities and professional membership, and collaborated with the world body on hosting the 29th Symposium of Malaysian Chemical Engineers (SOMChE 2016) in Miri in 2016.
