Curtin Malaysia values Curtin’s continued achievement in global subject rankings, including second for Mineral and Mining Engineering

Miri – 5 March 2019 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia, is pleased that Curtin has continued to rank highly in the recently released 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject, including its standing as the world’s second-ranked institution for Mineral and Mining Engineering.

Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said the latest edition of the global rankings shows Curtin being ranked among the top 50 across the globe in two subject areas, with Earth and Marine Sciences ranked 35th in addition to Mineral and Mining Engineering at second for the third year in a row.

“This speaks volumes of the quality of courses and education Curtin provides across all its campuses in Perth, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius,” Professor Mienczakowski remarked.

He said the latest results are very profound for Curtin Malaysia which offers relevant Curtin courses in the two subject areas, namely the Bachelor of Science in Applied Geology and Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering, as well as a range of relevant postgraduate programmes by coursework and research.

“Students in these courses are thus assured that they are taking courses that are among the best in the world, and that is in addition to many other courses for which Curtin is top-ranked,” he added.

The latest edition of the world’s most-consulted university rankings show Curtin achieved rankings in 24 subjects, with six subjects listed in the top 100 across the globe. Those subjects included Architecture and Built Environment (51-100), Education (51-100), Civil and Structural Engineering (51-100), and Sports-related subjects (51-100).

Curtin is ranked in the top 100 for Civil & Structural Engineering, top 150 for Communication & Media Studies and Chemical Engineering; top 200 for Accounting & Finance, Business & Management Studies, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering; top 250 for Mechanical Engineering, and top 350 for Computer Science & Information Systems.

These rankings are also of immediate relevance to Curtin Malaysia as it offers Curtin’s Bachelor of Engineering in Civil & Construction Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering; Bachelor of Science in Computing; Bachelor of Technology in Computer Systems & Networking; Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication; Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance, Management & Marketing, and Management & Human Resources Management; and Bachelor of Business Administration.

At postgraduate level, Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin’s Master of Science in Project Management, Master of International Business and Master of Engineering Management, as well as postgraduate research programmes in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Accounting, and Management, among others.

“Curtin Malaysia is extremely proud to offer all these world-ranked courses, and at very affordable Malaysian fees, I might add. Students study the exact same courses and get the same degrees as in Australia,” said Professor Mienczakowski.

Professor Mienczakowski’s sentiments echoed those of Curtin University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry’s who said in Perth last week that that the results continued to highlight Curtin’s strengths.

“The QS World University Rankings by Subject offer the world’s most popular source of comparative data about university performance and I am delighted that Curtin continues to rank second in the world for Mineral and Mining Engineering,” Professor Terry said.

“These results are a reflection of our dedication to high-quality research and teaching, and we remain committed to further developing Curtin’s standing as an international leader across more fields of study.”

The 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject considered more than 1,200 universities across 78 countries all over the world.
