Curtin Open Day 2010 to include workshops and talks for secondary school students and potential students

Miri – 15 September 2010 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak)’s Curtin Open Day this Saturday (18 September 2010) will include workshops and academic talks that will greatly benefit secondary school students sitting the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) this year, as well as potential students interested in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the university.

An ‘SPM workshop’ themed ‘How To Be A Champion’ in the Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre from 10.30 am to 12.00 noon will help Form Five students prepare for the upcoming SPM examination. It is geared towards motivating them and helping them develop their academic skills, as well as alleviating the anxiety and guesswork that comes with preparing for examinations.

It will be facilitated by highly-experienced, award-winning lecturer Terence Tan of the university’s School of Engineering and Science, who promises to bring out the champions in participating students.

 

Postgraduate coordinator Cecilia Anthony Das will conduct a preview of Curtin Sarawak’s postgraduate programmes in the School of Business’ LTBS1 lecture theatre from 11.00 am to 12.00 noon.

Cecilia will talk about the benefits and opportunities that come with the attainment of further professional or postgraduate qualifications, as well as outline the professional and postgraduate courses offered at Curtin Sarawak.

They include a Graduate Certificate in Project Management. Graduate Diploma in Project Management, Master of Science (Project Management) and Master of Accounting, as well as a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which are by research.

From 1.00 pm to 2.00 pm, Dr Franz-Luitpold Kessler, head of the School of Engineering & Science’s Applied Geology Department, will present a talk on ‘The Geology of Miri and Surroundings’ in the same venue.

The dean of the School of Foundation and Continuing Studies and The Learning Centre, Beena Giridharan will meanwhile deliver a talk on ‘The Curtin Advantage after SPM’ in the Harry Perkins Lecture Theatre from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm.

Those interested to know more about the ‘Past, Present and Future of the Computer’ are invited to attend Associate Professor Dr Ashutosh Kumar Singh’s talk on the subject in the LTBS 1 lecture theatre from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. Dr Ashutosh is the head of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering in the School of Engineering and Science.

A final talk on ‘The School of Business – The Window To Your Future’ conducted by Cecilia Anthony Das will be held from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm in the LTBS 11 lecture theatre.

Admission to all the talks is free.

Curtin Open Day is the occasion each year when Curtin Sarawak throws open its doors, inviting the local community to visit its campus and spend the day enjoying a variety of interesting activities in a truly festive and fun atmosphere.

It will be held from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm and will feature a Technology & Innovation Exhibition, Kite Festival, Future Students’ Booth, International Culture Exhibition, Charity & Community Corner, Environmental Awareness Corner and Kiddies’ Corner, in addition to the workshops and academic talks.

There will also be a blood donation drive and free health checks, food and drink stalls, product display and retail booths, live musical and dance performances, fashion and hairstyling shows, singing competition and lucky draws.
