Curtin public relations students get pointers from PR consultant

Miri – 27 June 2019 – Public relations students of the Department of Marketing in the Faculty of Business of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) had the opportunity to gain insights into public relations practice in a talk by public relations consultant and Curtin alumnus Agnes Nyelang recently.

In her talk entitled ‘The Journey from Corporate to Consultancy’, Agnes, who now runs her own public relations consultancy firm in Miri, shared her 14 years’ experience working as an in-house public relations practitioner in four different organisations and her current life as a consultant.

According to Public Relations unit leader Dr. Adamu Abbas Adamu, the objective of the talk was to expose the students to career opportunities in public relations and also learn how public relations practitioners with extensive experience and business acumen can broaden their horizons by starting their own public relations consultancies.

Meanwhile, Head of the Department of Marketing Dr. Fidella Tiew said the department is committed to hosting talks and conducting industry visits for its students as an extension of their classroom learning, allowing them to connect theories learned in the classroom to real-life industry practice.

She added that it is also an enrichment of their overall student experience, and an opportunity to learn from and network with industry professionals and ensure they are industry-connected and career-capable upon graduation.

Dr. Tiew urged teaching staff of the Department of Marketing to continue inviting industry experts to give guest lectures and talks as they can be highly beneficial to students in their current studies and in their future careers.
