Curtin Sarawak at 13th Post Graduate Education Fair

Miri – 13 October 2010 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) was among institutions of higher learning from throughout Malaysia and abroad who participated in the thirteenth edition of the Post Graduate Education Fair at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre from 8 to 10 October 2010.

The Post Graduate Education Fair is Malaysia’s largest post graduate education fair and has attracted more than half a million visitors since 2002. The 13th Post Graduate Education Fair 2010 was held for the ninth consecutive year.

The fair offers academic institutions and professional bodies an effective platform to showcase their courses and qualifications, and provide fresh graduates and working professionals relevant information and professional advice on specific subject areas and future career path opportunities.

“Working professionals with undergraduate degrees can expand their horizons or become experts in their fields through postgraduate study. In addition to furthering their education and increasing their knowledge base, they can research their area of interest, learn and work with leaders in the industry, and advance their careers,” said Alex Chung, Curtin Sarawak’s Director of Development, who headed the university’s marketing team at the event.

He said that, at Curtin Sarawak, one can choose to complete a range of postgraduate levels of study. Students eligible for postgraduate study are also given several options in either research or coursework.

According to Chung, Curtin Sarawak’s participation in the 13th Post Graduate Education Fair was crucial as the university continues to expand its range of postgraduate courses.

Currently, Curtin Sarawak offers courses of study leading to a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master of Science degree in Project Management; Master of Accounting; and Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in business or engineering. Additional courses such as a Master of Corporate Governance, Master of Policy Science and Master of International Business have been proposed and are likely to be launched soon.

Chung said that Curtin Sarawak is also considering collaborating with a reputable partner in Kuala Lumpur to offer its postgraduate courses there as the preference amongst KLites seems to be for part-time study rather than full-time. Curtin Sarawak has such an arrangement with the Centre for Modern Management in Kuching, which has seen steadily growing cohorts of students for its Master of Science (Project Management) course there.

“Participating in such a large international education fair as the Post Graduate Education Fair was indeed a good experience and exposure for us. It gave us the opportunity to assess our market positioning and benchmark ourselves against other institutions,” Chung commented.

He added that the event was very well organised and that it was actually a combination of an education fair and career fair. The choice of venue also got the thumbs up from Chung as there was significant human traffic throughout the event. Furthermore, there was sufficient promotion and publicity which generated considerable public interest and attracted the right market.

An estimated 98,269 graduates and working professionals visited the fair. The event also attracted about 60 institutions from Malaysia, Australia, Brunei, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Curtin Sarawak is a popular choice for its international outlook, innovative courses, world-class teaching facilities, flexible study options, applied and practical subjects, use of advanced technology, partnerships with industry and government, ideal campus location, experienced academics and staff, and active community engagement.

Another attraction for students is the fact that every aspect of academic programmes at Curtin Sarawak are identical to those offered at Curtin’s main campus in Perth. Many of the academic programmes are also accredited by higher education and professional bodies, attesting to their quality and giving them much added value.
