Miri – 10 April 2013 – Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) is set to hold its annual Award and Scholarship Ceremony, graduation ceremonies for its graduating classes of 2012, and annual dinner for its alumni, this 26 and 27 April 2013.

The Award and Scholarship Ceremony will be held in the evening of 26 April in the Grand Ballroom of the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club.

On 27 April, Curtin Sarawak’s School of Business and School of Continuing Studies will jointly host the School of Business and Diploma Graduation Ceremony at the university’s Recreation and Event Centre, which will be followed later in the day by the School of Engineering and Science Graduation Ceremony.

Also on 27 April will be the Curtin Sarawak Alumni Dinner for all Curtin Sarawak alumni in the Grand Ballroom at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club. An estimated 300 former students of the university, both at Miri and the main campus in Perth, are expected to attend.

The Award and Scholarship Ceremony will see students and staff of the university being recognised for academic or professional excellence, outstanding extracurricular activities and community service contributions. They will include students who made it into the Vice Chancellor’s List and graduating student ambassadors of the John Curtin Leadership Academy, Curtin’s elite leadership programme. Scholarships from Curtin and its industry partners, as well as individual donors, will also be presented to deserving students.

The School of Business and Diploma Graduation Ceremony, meanwhile, will see 244 students graduating from the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce programmes, 32 from the Graduate Certificate in Project Management, Master of Accounting and Master of Science (Project Management) programmes.

Meanwhile, 84 students will graduate from the Diploma in Business, Diploma in Process Plant Technology and Diploma in Health and Safety programmes.

173 students will graduate from the School of Engineering and Science’s Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology), Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) and Bachelor of Technology (Computer Systems and Networking) programmes, as well as two from its Doctor of Philosophy programmes majoring in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam, chairman of the Curtin Sarawak Campus Council, is expected to officiate at all the events. Assistant Minister of Sports and Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who is also the chairman of Curtin Sarawak’s Management Board, will also be present, along with Curtin Sarawak Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Ian Kerr; Chairman of Curtin (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., Datu Dr. Hatta Solhi; members of Curtin Sarawak Campus Council and Management Board, as well as a delegation from Curtin University in Perth headed by Acting Chancellor Chris Bennett and Vice-Chancellor Professor Jeanette Hacket.

Students who completed their programmes at the end of Semester 1 or Semester 2 of 2012 and have met all requirements for graduation have been invited to attend their respective graduation ceremonies.

Student Services Manager and chair of the university’s graduations committee Audrey Palance said the graduation events are always highly anticipated not only by the graduands but also their parents and family members.

“We strive to make the ceremonies as grand and meaningful as possible, befitting Curtin Sarawak’s status as Curtin University’s largest international campus. As the testamurs are conferred by the main campus, the Acting Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, as well as other senior officials of the university, come all the way from Perth to be part of the ceremonies,” she said.

“Graduands who are already working in their hometowns or elsewhere in Malaysia, or international students in their home countries, accompanied by their parents and family members, would make the effort to attend,” she added.

Representatives of the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE (GippsTAFE) in Australia, Curtin Sarawak’s partner in conducting its diploma programmes, comprising Deputy Chair Joanne Stringer and General Manager, Teaching & Learning Carol Elliot, will also be attending.
