Curtin Sarawak donates computers to education centre

Miri – 25 April 2013 – Demonstrating its continued commitment to building strong community relations, Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently donated six used computers to the Victory Education Centre in Permyjaya.

Organised as part of the university’s community outreach programme by its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department and CSR & Campaigns Focus Group under its Corporate Communications Department, the ongoing computer donation project at Curtin Sarawak aims to provide charities and non-governmental organisations with refurbished and reusable computers and peripherals.

“By donating our used computers, we are promoting community development and helping bridge the gap in technology access between children of higher and lower income families,” said Nuurrianti, who heads the CSR & Campaigns Focus Group.

According to her, Curtin Sarawak has made similar donations to several local charities in the past, and more computers will be available in due course as the university continues to upgrade its computer laboratories and office computer systems.

Handing over the computers to the centre’s teachers, Babra Nalam and Minti Dindang, in a simple ceremony at the centre were corporate communications officer Nuurrianti Jalli and ICT maintenance and support staffers Petrus Kalom and Alvin Anthony Hajok.

The Victory Education Centre is a non-profit organisation that provides quality, accessible and affordable education for underprivileged children regardless of their background.

According to Ong Ewe Gnoh, president of the Victory Education Centre, the centre’s mission is to support the education needs of Sarawakian Bumiputera children who are less fortunate, as well as train kindergarten teachers in early childhood education through a systematic, wholesome curriculum. He believes that education is a medium for transformation and overcoming poverty.

Meanwhile, Babra thanked Curtin Sarawak for the computers which she said would go a long way towards the delivery of quality and affordable education at the centre.
