Curtin Sarawak holding SPM Workshops for students in Kuching, Sibu and Kota Kinabalu

Miri – 6 October 2009 – As a leading educational institution in East Malaysia with vast experience in providing academic support and guidance, Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak), is for the first time offering to help Form Five students prepare for the upcoming SPM examination.

The university is organising a series of SPM Workshops for students in Kuching, Sibu and Kota Kinabalu with the aim of motivating the students, helping then develop their academic skills and alleviate as much as possible the anxiety and guesswork that comes with preparing for examinations.

With a catchy ‘SPM: Lights, Camera, Action!’ theme and facilitated by highly-experienced, award-winning lecturer Terrance Tan of Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science, the first workshop (for all streams) will be held between 2 pm and 4 pm at the Grand Continental Hotel in Kuching on 17 October 2009.

The second workshop, in Sibu and also for all streams, will be from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Premier Hotel on 18 October 2009. The workshop in Kota Kinabalu on 23 October 2009, meanwhile, will be held from 1 pm to 3 pm for the Science streams and 3 pm to 5 pm for the Arts streams at the Tang Dynasty Hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

Students from secondary schools in the three locations have been invited to participate in the workshops, which are free of charge. As there are limited seats available, registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and registration forms are to reach Curtin Sarawak’s Marketing Department no later than 12 October 2009.

The workshops are set to give the students a spirited boost to face the SPM and an opportunity to gain valuable insights from Tan, a graduate of Imperial College London and inspiring lecturer who has successfully motivated his students to not only excel in their studies, but also win in state and national-level competitions. He was a winner of Curtin’s Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award in 2008 and Student Choice Award for three consecutive years.

“I am very passionate about teaching and the development of students as individuals. I believe learning should be inspiring and thought-provoking and, most of all, enjoyable and fulfilling. That is what we will try to achieve in these workshops. Thus the theme ‘Lights, Camera, Action!” declared Tan.
