Curtin Sarawak student appointed environmental envoy

Miri – 15 October 2010 – A student of Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia), Alan Chew Hock Leong, from the university’s School of Engineering and Science, was appointed a Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) for 2010 following the Bayer Young Environmental Programme 2010 (BYEEP) run in Sarawak.

Under the programme, Chew had the opportunity to participate in a live-in youth environment camp in Bintulu and Miri from 21 to 25 June 2010 along with eight other Bayer Young Environmental Envoys from various parts of the country.

Bayer Young Environmental Envoys are bright young individuals who have a real passion for the environment. They demonstrate leadership and commitment to environmental protection by actively participating in environmental activities in school and their local communities. Concern for the environment reflects in their day-to-day life.

As a Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, Chew was required to work with the other envoys on projects to promote environmental consciousness within the local community.

The efforts of the envoys were recently recognised at an awards presentation ceremony at the One World Hotel in Petaling Jaya.

The Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Programme is a global environmental education programme for the youths aged 18 and 24 and studying in an institute of higher learning in Malaysia. It is organised by Bayer Co. and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the aim of developing young environmental leaders and boosting the level of environmental awareness among the youth.

It is being run in 18 countries on four continents and though this was the fifth time it has been organised in Malaysia, it was extended to East Malaysia for the first time.

“I found the programme to be very well organised and very relevant to young people. Not only did it help me improve my knowledge about environment, but it also supported me and my fellow envoys in our environmental commitment. Furthermore, it exposed us to the corporate environment and was a good training ground for leadership,” said Chew.
