Curtin Sarawak students adopt playground as part of activities under Moral Studies unit

Miri – 2 December 2013 – 265 students of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) recently adopted the public playground in Lutong under their ‘Adopt a Playground’ project, which is a component of the Moral Studies unit they are taking.

Carried out in collaboration with the Miri City Council, the adoption included raising funds to maintain and enhance facilities at the playground to make it more conducive and safer for children.

The students were led by Barry Lian Ingan, Associate Lecturer in the Department of Language Studies and Humanities, School of Continuing Studies.

According to Barry, the objectives of the project were to raise awareness of social responsibility and promote teamwork among the students, get them involved in giving back to society, as well as apply analytical skills and Moral Studies theories in organising a fundraising activity.

The funds collected were handed over to Chee Kie Chang, Miri City Council’s horticulturist, at a simple cheque presentation ceremony at the playground. Present to witness the presentation was Curtin Sarawak’s deputy pro vice-chancellor, Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia.

Under the Moral Studies unit, the students also paid a visit to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Miri to gain a better understanding of the role the agency and its personnel. The visit allowed them to apply the Deontology Theory taught in the unit in relation to the obligations and duties of the country’s defence personnel.

Another community service project undertaken by the students in collaboration with the Miri City Council was the ‘Taking Charge’ project which involved giving ideas on ‘How to Improve Miri City’, enabling them to actively contribute to the advancement of the city.
